The St Hugo Barossa Valley Shiraz 2014 is a superbly matured expression of one of the region’s most respected labels, delivering depth, power and refinement that only time can create. Now beautifully evolved in bottle, it pours a deep garnet-crimson hue and opens with pronounced aromas of ripe blackberry, mulberry, blood plum and prune, layered seamlessly with vanilla, dark chocolate, liquorice, mint and black pepper, alongside subtle notes of toast, smoke, leather and earthy complexity from well-integrated oak.
The palate is rich, full-bodied and commanding, offering generous dark berry, cassis and plum fruit with a slightly jammy richness balanced by savoury undertones of charcuterie, black olive, baked earth and soy, creating exceptional depth and intrigue. Fine-grained, polished tannins and bright supporting acidity carry the wine through to a long, velvety finish that lingers with sweet fruit, spice and vanilla oak.
Its pedigree is reinforced by outstanding critical acclaim, earning 95 Points and Gold Medals at both the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards and Royal Queensland Wine Awards, 94 Points from the Halliday Wine Companion and 93 Points from Huon Hooke at The Real Review. Drinking superbly now yet still offering further graceful development, this is an ideal match for slow-roasted lamb, beef wellington, venison, mushroom-based dishes or aged hard cheeses, where its richness and savoury complexity truly shine.
A benchmark mature Barossa Shiraz, the 2014 St Hugo delivers a luxurious, layered drinking experience that rewards both collectors and lovers of perfectly cellared Australian reds.
94 Point Rated - James Halliday Wine Companion
"From the far south and far north of the Barossa (avoiding the centre), matured in mostly French oak (70% new) with a small portion of American, for 19 months. A rich, complex and layered shiraz with blood plum and blackberry varietal fruit, the one fairly obvious question whether less new oak would have made a better wine - and yes, it would have."
93 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review
"Deep red/purple colour. The bouquet is licorice, fruitcake, but fresh and in good condition. The wine is big and bold, quite tannic and solid, with generous oak and substantial richness. Chocolate and fruitcake flavours galore. A big wine, with a rather firm finish."
