Tasting Notes:

The Glaetzer Bishop Barossa Valley Shiraz 2022 is a masterful expression of old-vine Ebenezer fruit, crafted from vineyards aged between 35 and 120 years that consistently deliver the depth, energy and structure that define the northern Barossa. In the glass, it shines with vibrant dark cherry and purple hues before opening into aromas of black cherries, dried spice and subtle hints of pepper and olive. The 2022 season is widely regarded as a standout year that produced wines with both elegance and solid fruit weight, and this release reflects that perfectly.

Fermented in small open fermenters with extended maceration to soften tannins and enhance mouthfeel, then matured for 16 months in a mix of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads, the palate flows with glossy layers of black cherry, berry compote, blackberry and spice, supported by bright natural acidity and beautifully balanced tannins that glide through a long, supple finish. Rated 95 Points by Ray Jordan, 94 Points and 5 Stars by Sam Kim, 93 Points by James Suckling and 91 Points by Robert Parker Wine Advocate, this is a Shiraz of generous volume and impressive age-worthiness, drinking superbly now but with the ability to cellar for up to 10–15 years.

Perfect alongside char-grilled rib-eye, slow-braised beef cheeks, roasted mushrooms or sharp aged cheddar, it stands as one of the most reliably expressive Barossa releases of the vintage.

Accolades & Awards:

95 Point Rated - Ray Jordan Wine Pilot

''The quality of this vintage is immediately evident. The fruit was sourced from the Ebenezer subregion and that brings a distinctive iron stone slightly rusty nail character to the beautiful fruit. Spicy iron filings, dark plum and spicy red fruits on the nose. The density of the fruit has enabled Glaetzer to smack 40% new oak into it. A small amount of American rounds out the finish and palate feel."

94 Point Rated & 5 Stars - Sam Kim Wine Orbit

"It's splendidly fruited and inviting on the nose, showing dark berry, warm spice, roasted hazelnut, and subtle cocoa aromas, followed by a succulent palate that displays terrific weight and a fleshy mouthfeel. Beautifully framed by silky texture and fine grained tannins, finishing splendidly long and satisfying."

93 Point Rated - James Suckling

"A solid, well-made and linear shiraz with blackberries, dried herbs, meat and some baking spices. It’s medium- to full-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Vivid, with a kick of peppercorn on the palate, balancing with the rich core of fruit. Fleshy, generous and in control, with a flavorful, persistent finish. Drink or hold."

91 Point Rated - Erin Larkin Robert Parker Wine Advocate

"The 2022 Bishop Shiraz is silky and concentrated, with lashings of regionally persuasive fruit and chewy tannin. Though not a hugely complex wine, it is very satisfying and delivers a convincing argument for Barossa Shiraz."

Winsor Dobbin Winsor's Choice

“I generally don’t drink more than a glass or two of Barossa reds in one sitting nowadays. This was an exception. I enjoy my reds with flavour – but also some elegance. Here is a Barossa shiraz that boasts both – and it is a serious bargain from Ben Glaetzer, made from vines aged between 35-120 years old in Ebenezer sub-region. From a very good vintage, it is made in a style that is approachable when young, but I also reckon this would cellar well. So, think concentrated dark fruit flavours, quality French and American oak and a soft, supple finish. Why this doesn’t sell for a much higher price I have no idea.”
