The St Hugo Single Vineyard Southern Valley Barossa Shiraz 2016 is a superb expression of Barossa Shiraz, crafted from a single vineyard in the southern end of the valley where red-fruit vibrancy, plush texture and regional typicity shine through with remarkable clarity. As a 5 Red Star winery in the Halliday Wine Companion, St Hugo continues to uphold its legacy of excellence, producing wines of exemplary quality and precision since its establishment in 1983. This limited-release museum stock—now available at half price—offers an exceptional opportunity to experience a beautifully matured Barossa Shiraz at its peak.
In the glass, the 2016 vintage opens with dark, seductive aromatics of blackberry, dark cherry and ripe plum, all woven together with subtle hints of spice, oak and a gentle savoury undertone. The palate is rich, full-bodied and impeccably structured, delivering velvety tannins and a balanced natural acidity that lifts the fruit while adding length and finesse. As the wine unfolds, layers of blackcurrant, chocolate and warm spice expand across the palate, culminating in a long, satisfying finish that speaks to both vineyard pedigree and meticulous craftsmanship. Awarded 95 Points by Dave Brookes for the Halliday Wine Companion, this Shiraz demonstrates the depth, elegance and longevity that define St Hugo’s Single Vineyard releases.
Beautifully matured yet still holding impressive vitality, this wine pairs effortlessly with slow-cooked lamb shoulder, chargrilled rib-eye, rich beef stews, venison, roasted mushrooms, or hard cheeses such as aged cheddar or manchego. Its richness and supple tannins also make it a standout for celebratory dining, where its complexity and refined character can truly be appreciated.
95 Point Rated - Dave Brookes James Halliday Wine Companion
"I have a sneaking suspicion that this release, from the excellent 2016 vintage, will keep on truckin' in the cellar for many years. That's not to say its lush red and dark berry and plum fruits aren't delicious now – all flecked with cedar and oak spice, violets and chocolate, they make an alluring package. But that granitic tannin structure is built for the long haul and I'd love to see this wine in a decade."
