The Grant Burge Filsell Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021 is a powerful and intensely expressive single-vineyard Shiraz that captures the depth, concentration and pedigree of one of Australia's most celebrated wine regions. Produced by the 5 Red Star-rated Grant Burge winery, recognised by the James Halliday Wine Companion, this outstanding release reflects an exceptional Barossa vintage shaped by ideal rainfall, mild summer temperatures and slow, even ripening that delivered remarkable fruit intensity and phenolic maturity.
Rich aromas of ripe cherry, dark chocolate and blackberry leap from the glass, leading into a full-bodied palate layered with damson plum, spice and espresso. Plush dark fruit is framed by firm, finely structured tannins that provide impressive length and precision, while subtle savoury notes and beautifully integrated oak add complexity. Dense yet beautifully balanced, the wine finishes long with lingering chocolate, coffee and spice, showcasing the power, elegance and regional character that define premium Barossa Shiraz.
Highly acclaimed by critics, the 2021 vintage has been awarded 95 Points by Huon Hooke and Aaron Brasher of The Real Review and 92 Points by Dave Brookes in the Halliday Wine Companion, following a previous vintage that earned 94 Points from Andrew Caillard MW. Produced by one of Australia's most respected wineries, this is a benchmark Barossa Shiraz with both immediate appeal and outstanding cellaring potential.
Perfectly paired with chargrilled rib-eye, slow-roasted lamb shoulder, braised beef cheeks, game meats or mature hard cheeses, this Shiraz will continue to reward careful cellaring for many years to come.
95 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review
"Very deep, bright, youthful purple colour; the nose is a mite subdued, reserved but latent, with some graphite and licorice touches, while the palate is very full-bodied and firmly structured, with mouth-coating, cheek-sucking tannins that bode well for its future. Loads of tannins but they're good tannins. Dense and concentrated, a terrific cellaring prospect."
95 Point Rated - Aaron Brasher The Real Review
"Deep, dark and inky in the glass, opaque. Dark aromas of plum, mulberry, iodine, graphite, spice and oak. Big, rich, dark and powerful. Intensely flavoured with plum, mulberry, liqueured chocolate, sweet spice and oak. Long, layered, mouth-fillingly opulent, with great power and balance. Archetypal Barossa shiraz."
92 Point Rated - Dave Brookes Halliday Wine Companion
"Deep crimson with aromas of blackberry, macerated plums, boysenberry and kirsch with hints of baking spices, dark chocolate, earth, pepper, violets, olive tapenade and chocolate-dipped cherries. Full bodied with dabs of creamy vanillin oak on the palate, tight, fine sandy tannins and a finish that trails away, showing notes of macerated summer berry fruits, spice and earth speaking truly of its regional origins."
