The Seppelt Drumborg Pinot Noir 2021 is a stunning expression of the renowned Seppelt Drumborg Vineyard in Henty, Victoria. Known for its cool climate, this vineyard consistently produces wines of exceptional quality, and the 2021 vintage is no exception. A dry late winter followed by wet conditions in October and November, combined with a mild summer and cool, dry harvest period, led to below-average yields but excellent fruit quality.
The fruit for this Pinot Noir was carefully destemmed into small open fermenters, with a proportion of whole bunches included. After 6-8 days of fermentation on skins, the wine underwent partial barrel fermentation, followed by 9 months of maturation in French oak (23% new and 77% seasoned). This process imparts complexity and structure to the wine, ensuring that the expressive fruit shines through.
In the glass, the Seppelt Drumborg Pinot Noir 2021 offers plush, mouth-filling juicy fruit, with notable flavors of cherry stone and redcurrant. The wine is very even and creamy, with a complex gunflint character and fine-grained tannins that add texture. Well-integrated, subtle oak provides a refined structure and persistence, allowing the wine’s power to be balanced with restrained delicacy. This Pinot Noir is a beautiful showcase of elegance, complexity, and precision.
Rated 96 points by James Halliday Wine Companion, 94 points by Andrew Caillard MW, and 93 points by Mike Bennie of The Wine Front, this wine is a true standout from Seppelt, a 5 Red Star rated winery that has been producing exceptional wines since its establishment in 1851.
This Pinot Noir is a perfect match for roasted duck, grilled salmon, or a wild mushroom risotto. Its fine tannins and balanced acidity also pair beautifully with soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert.

A masterclass in not judging pinot noir by the depth of its colour, here only a little deeper than its pinot meunier sibling. And there's more in the mouth, initially hesitant then majestically expanding on the finish and aftertaste, peacock's tail opening. The rainbow of berry aromas surging from the glass.

Some whole bunches, some barrel ferment, some new oak.
Balanced, elegant, refined and perfumed style. Silky in texture, glossy and spreads beautifully in the palate, red cherry, tart and sweet, some gentle clove and cedar spice elements, a bit of woody-twiggy chew to tannin but feels good in the flow and a bit of flinty-minerally character finishes the wine. Delightful.

Absolutely beautiful wine. Touch higher for me.

Medium depth red-purple, bright colour with a smoked charcuterie bouquet, the palate rich and full, complex and savoury with real depth and breadth of flavour that lasts. Attractive smoky oak has been used to good effect. Long, savoury aftertaste with softly drying tannins

From one of the most southerly vineyards in Victoria comes a pinot with “cool climate” written in big, bold letters all over it. You would love to get this wine in a Wine Options Game. Sinewy, fine and pure, it sings of its coastline location: of wild herbs, red cherry and undergrowth. Starts taut and then loosens right up, building, building as it goes. Cherry, cranberry, herbs, salt bush, a touch of smoky oak on the bouquet. A “proportion” of whole bunches was included in the winemaking, bringing a cut and thrust to the wine without being too over-powering. Some might think otherwise. A near-seamless palate awaits, mixing the softer aspects of the wine – stewed rhubarb and plum – held together with a sinewy tannin thread. The winemaker has matured the wine for 9 months in 23% new oak. It’s slurped it up, finishing with a light cigar-box-smokiness.
