At Hahndorf Hill we produce four different styles of Gruner, of which Gru is our classic style. Our 2019 Gru Gruner Veltliner was rated the best Gruner Veltliner at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020, London - and now the Gru 2020 was the top-rated Gruner Veltliner at the London Wine Competition 2021! This beautiful 2020 vintage Gru has an enticingly perfumed nose with citrus, nectarine, spice and flint. The palate is an adventure of texture and mouthfeel, and has vibrant layers of citrus/ ruby grapefruit, spice, crushed thyme, juicy acidity and a delicious core of yellow stone fruit. The finish is long and tasty with a wonderful textural rub. Perfectly matched with all Asian cuisine, white meats, sea-foods and vegetarian dishes. But most excitingly, here is the ultimate white wine that will match perfectly with your favourite rare sirloin steak!
Gruner Veltliner is a variety that ages well and this wine should develop splendidly for between 8 - 10 years.
At Hahndorf Hill we are passionate about Austrian varieties and are pioneering Gruner Veltliner, Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt and St Laurent in Australia.
It is our familiarity with Blaufrankisch, which has grown at Hahndorf Hill for over 25 years, that led us ultimately to its exciting white counterpart - Gruner Veltliner.
Having been unable to source Gruner plant material in Australia, we managed in 2006 to import three different clones directly from Austria, and again in 2009 a further three clones/clonal selections from Austria, all of which passed successfully through the Australian quarantine system.
In 2010 we released our debut vintage - which we affectionately named Gru. This was the first production of Gruner in South Australia (and the second within Australia, the first being Lark Hill from the Canberra wine region in 2009).

95 Point Rated - Tony Love James Halliday Wine Companion
"A well-defined middle path between a restrained fruit expression and more savoury lines. Typical notes of cut celery and white pepper, subtle citron and Granny Smith apple flavours. An immaculately tempered palate with a dash of spice and grapefruit pithy acidity. Pleasing and complex textures deliver a fulfilling wine on many counts."
93 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review
"Yeasty, egg-custard fresh-wine aroma, clean and fresh and bright, if not that aromatic. The wine is delicate and dry, with tannins adding to the dryness of aftertaste. Traces of stone-fruits. The wine is straightforward and firm, but not bitter. A very smart young wine that promises to give more when it settles down fully. (30% barrel fermented in older wood, and it isn't obvious)."
