Tasting Notes:

The Mr Mick Clare Valley Tempranillo 2023 is a modern Australian interpretation of a revered Old World variety, crafted with clarity, charm and drinkability by legendary winemaker Tim Adams. Named in honour of K.H. “Mr Mick” Knappstein — one of Australia’s Top Ten Iconic Winemakers — this release reflects the Clare Valley’s long-standing reputation for innovation, taking European classics and reshaping them with freshness and regional character.

Clare Valley’s warm days and cool nights closely mirror the central Spanish regions where Tempranillo thrives, creating a naturally balanced, juicy style that has become a favourite among locals and visitors alike. Fruit for this vintage was sourced from the estate’s Rogers and Sheoaks vineyards, including the Fechner Family’s Sheoaks site, before being gently fermented on skins for one week to maximise colour and aromatic lift while keeping tannins fine and supple. The wine was then pressed and matured with a light touch of French oak, adding subtle perfume and texture without overshadowing the vibrant fruit core.

In the glass, the wine opens with an inviting burst of fresh cherry and red plum, lifted by a gentle wood-smoke nuance from French oak and hints of roasted coffee bean. A savoury edge runs through the aromatics, echoing classic Spanish influences while remaining distinctly Clare Valley in its brightness. The palate is silky and smooth, delivering layers of raspberry, dry spice and mocha over a fine, supportive tannin backbone that provides shape and length without weight. The finish is clean, soft and lingering, making this an effortlessly drinkable style that can be enjoyed now or cellared for up to ten years for those who prefer added savoury complexity.

Designed with the table firmly in mind, this Tempranillo is a natural partner for shared plates and relaxed dining. Its juicy red fruit and crunchy acidity shine alongside pizza, pasta and Mediterranean dishes layered with tomato, herbs, grilled meats or charred vegetables. In warmer months, it becomes even more appealing slightly chilled, gaining extra lift and freshness that pair beautifully with tapas, summer salads, slow-roasted capsicum, jamón or spicy chorizo sautéed with garlic and olive oil.

Family-owned and operated, Mr Mick continues to celebrate the Clare Valley’s flair for innovation and drinkability. The Mr Mick Clare Valley Tempranillo 2023 captures that spirit perfectly — vibrant, versatile and crafted purely for enjoyment, delivering a confident Paso Doble with a distinctly Australian rhythm.
