The rich dark palate is filled with blackberry and black olive. Classic supple, powdery tannins and balanced acidity, frame the dense core of fruit creating a beautifully balanced wine. A diverse array of blackberry, dark cherry and black olive, further complexed by notes of liquorice, violets and tobacco. Classy oak contributes cigarbox nuances.
First produced in 1954, and widely known as ‘Black Label’, Wynns
Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon has established a reputation for
displaying excellent varietal and regional characteristics. The wine is
produced from only the top 20-25% of Cabernet fruit available from
Wynns Coonawarra Estate.
A wine of style and stature, and a perennial favourite in auction circles, the
‘Black Label’ is one of Australia’s most collectable wines and Australia’s
benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon. It consistently delivers the potential for
medium to long-term cellaring, with the average vineyard age for Wynns
‘Black Label’ over 35 years.
Vintage Conditions in 2012 is an excellent vintage and this Wynns ‘Black Label’ Cabernet will once again provide a benchmark for this wonderful Coonawarra season. Matured for 16 months in a mixture of 25% new and 75% older French oak barriques, hogsheads and vats.
98 Points - Huon Hooke The Real Review
"Deep, youthful red/purple colour. The bouquet is rich and deep, with tremendous intensity and brightness, structure and persistence. A thoroughly impressive young wine. Violets. The tannins are ample and firm and in perfect balance with the wine. This will be very long-lived indeed. Great stuff."
96 Points - James Halliday Wine Companion
"Another wine from Wynns and the '12 vintage that shows a significant change in winemaking direction, with the alcohol of 13.5%. While the Woodley Treasure Chest wines were basically shiraz, none wholly cabernet sauvignon, this wine has a structure those wines had in their early maturity. What is most interesting here is the early development on the palate of savoury flavours and firm tannins, yet allowing the fruit to maintain its line through to the all-important finish, where balance is not in question."
95 Points - Bob Campbell Master Of Wine
"Masses of cassis with hints of cedar, mint? And a touch of bitter chocolate and spice (anise?). Elegant, complex."
95 Points - Ray Jordan
"Such a pure and perfect expression of Coonawarra cabernet. This is a lineage going back to 1954 - a wine that even a few years ago was drinking superbly. Balanced and so precise, with powdery tannins and fine-grained oak merging seamlessly with silky-smooth fruit and a concentrated core every serious cellar should have this wine."
95 Points - Tyson Stelzer, Wine Taste
"The backbone of Black Label are Wynns' magnificent single vineyards on the terra rossa strip. The 2012 is classic Coonawarra cabernet, back in the admirably restrained mould of 2009. It's an excellent release, classic, fine-boned, taut and drawn, built around a fine scaffold of rigid, fine and textural tannins. There's a core of coiled blackcurrant fruit of focused definition; elegantly medium-bodied and effortless, with fine, mineral tannins drawn from the limestone of Coonawarra. It seems the official price is edging ever higher, though the best street prices remain at the same affordable level. Drink: 2022-2032"
95 Points - Jeremy Oliver, Onwine
"A classical, long-term cabernet that marries perfectly ripened fruit with excellent oak and structure. Its deep, alluring fragrance of cassis, dark plums, cedar and vanilla are backed by nuances of mint, menthol and graphite. Long and elegant, it’s dripping with a luxuriant depth of dark berry and plum-like flavour supported by fine, polished tannins and tight-grained oak, finishing with charming balance and focus, a hint of mineral, persistence and freshness. Drink: 2022 to 2032+"
95 Points - Nick Butler, Gourmet Wine Traveller
"Has beautifully fragrant, sweet dark fruit with understated cedary oak and a mere suggestion of cabernet leafiness. The palate is supple with a good depth of blackcurrant flavour and excellent length. Huon Hooke loved it." Superbly fresh, clean aromas," he began. "Dark berries, violets and spices. Some dried herbs. The palate is loaded with sweetly ripe, delicious dark berry cabernet flavour. The tannins are light, but firm and fine. A gorgeous wine, very fruit-driven and still young. It promises a long life."
95 Points - Sarah Ahmed, Decanter
"Medium-bodied with lovely line and length, this sophisticated Coonawarra stalwart shows very persistent and juicy, perfumed cassis fruit, savoury black olive and cedar oak. Polished to perfection and stunning value."
