Tasting Notes:

The Wolf Blass Platinum Label Shiraz 2018 is an exceptional expression of Barossa Valley Shiraz, sourced from the distinguished Medlands Vineyard, located in the heart of the central north Barossa Valley. This vineyard, long renowned for its ability to produce outstanding Shiraz, benefits from a unique microclimate with cooling breezes from the North Para River, providing the perfect environment for growing grapes with optimum ripening conditions. The vineyard is planted in ancient soils, ranging from loamy sands to sandy loams over light clays, laid down millions of years ago, adding distinct complexity to the wine’s profile.

The Medlands Vineyard terroir is unmistakably expressed in the 2018 Wolf Blass Platinum Label Shiraz, with lifted aromas of blueberry, blackberry, and dark plum, intertwined with complex undertones of bittersweet chocolate, freshly ground coffee, and warm oak spice. These aromas create a beautifully intricate and layered bouquet that speaks to the purity and elegance of the vineyard’s fruit.

The palate is rich and opulent, laden with dark berry flavors that are given tight focus and balance by the addition of fine, spicy French oak. The wine’s texture is sleek and silky, with a definitive tannin line and a long, lingering finish that showcases its complexity and finesse. The 2018 Platinum Label Shiraz has the elegance and structure expected from this renowned vineyard, combining grace with stature and presence.

Rated 97 points by James Halliday of Wine Companion and 96 points from Ray Jordan of Winepilot, Jeni Port of Winepilot, and Andrew Caillard MW of Langton's, this wine stands as a testament to the exceptional quality of the Medlands Vineyard and the skill of Wolf Blass winemakers.

Accolades & Awards:

97 Point Rated James Halliday Halliday Wine Companion

"Limited Release. Selectiv' harvested, open fermented, 5 separate parcels fermented and matured for 18 months in French oak (23% new), then assessed and blended, the hue vibrant. Any thought of blockbuster is instantly dismissed with the 1st taste. It is an elegant medium-bodied wine, albeit with a compelling blend of blackberry, spice and plum. The oak integrated, tannins perfectly pitched behind the fruit. Gold medals Barossa and Royal Adelaide Wine Shows ’20."

96 Point Rated Ray Jordan Wine Pilot

"This comes from an old vineyard in the heart of the Barossa Valley. Wow there’s a lot happening here. The nose displays a mix of black and blue fruits with spices, liquorice and coffee grounds aromas. The palate is concentrated and intense. The wine gets all French oak and only 23% of this is new making a most stylish expression of Barossa shiraz but you can’t take that power away – it’s there in abundance. This will cellar for many years."

96 Point Rated Jeni Port Winepilot

"The pick of the newly released Wolf Blass Luxury Collection, Platinum Label also happens to be the wine with the highest price tag. This wine simply sings the strongest of the group, has a more immediate and compelling presence with a fineness in detail. Fruit was sourced from the Medlands Vineyard at Dorrien just a bit down the road from the Wolf Blass winery and visitors centre. The single vineyard produces a striking magenta-purple colour. Foliage, briar, earth meet the nose together with black berries. It’s on the ripe side – 14.5% ABV – and so the usual Barossa sweet berried fruits are a notable feature.  In keeping with the general move in Australian winemaking circles towards a degree of savouriness in reds, Platinum brings forth a ferrous/iron quality. Love the overall balance on display here together with the decision to employ only French oak  – 28% of it new – during its 17 months maturation. It brings effortless structure and length."

95 Point Rated Huon Hooke Expert Review

"Deep, saturated purple colour that stains the glass. The bouquet is reserved and slightly hidden, showing dominant mocha and toasty oak aromas. The wine is powerful and driving in the mouth, with masses of tannin and concentration to match. Dried herbs and 'forest floor'. A tarry, graphite note lingers long. This is a whopper, which needs time and will richly benefit from cellaring."

94 Point Rated Ken Gargett Expert Review

"Deep purple and opened with a complex nose. Truffles, dark berries, mulberries, chocolate, coffee grinds, animal skins. This is exhibiting more savoury notes than the cabernet and is powerful, coiled and concentrated with a gentle casing of oak. Tannins are abundant but still a little chewy. This lacks the immediate gratification offered by the cabernet sauvignon, but is still a wine with a serious future. It will be better with time and likely to be several points higher in a decade."

94 Point Rated Mike Bennie Expert Review

"A full and powerful shiraz, very dense and dark, brooding, sweet berried fruit, booze soaked forest berries, woody spice, a bit of tobacco and cinnamon in there too. Chewy tannins roll strong and long in the wine, masking some fruit, puckering to dry. The feel is of a wine in stasis, a bit firm to be approached now and without some of the easy pleasure of some Platinum releases, or at least the awe. It’s very good, anyway, potent and formidable in its structure and carriage of flavour. Bold, fancy red lovers I wager will be satisfied with the lip-smacking. striking wine in the glass."
