Tasting Notes:

This St Hugo Shiraz Cabernet is a celebration of the Australian tradition of blending two of the world’s top red wine grape varieties. This is a wine of power and elegance, with strong tannins and a rich palate. Poured into a wine glass, it flaunts a deep purple colour with a vibrant hue. The well balanced nose offers dark berry fragrances in addition to refreshing mint notes, spice, cedar, and a hint of char from the oak ageing. The palate is just as balanced, with the sweet fruit and tannin structure working perfectly. Together, they result in an intense finish. Pair it with meaty beef or venison preparations. Also recommended is a juicy fillet of venison with crisp, roasted veggies, and a blackberry and red wine sauce.

Technical:

St Hugo is the legacy of Hugo Gramp, who was born as well as worked his entire life in Barossa Valley, one of the world’s most recognized wine regions. The first wine labeled St Hugo was released in 1983. His grandfather Johann Gramp is one of the most renowned wine pioneers of Australia.

Accolades & Awards:

94 Point Rated - James halliday Wine Companion

"A full-bodied wine that has better line and structure than its siblings, although it has (very properly) some years yet in which to come together; it has depth to its blackcurrant/blackberry fruit, and to its very good tannin structure."

90 Point Rated - Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

"St Hugo Shiraz, from the Barossa, at 14.9% alcohol and with a full RRP of $55. Just presenting the facts.

The wine itself is a throwback to the days when bigger is or was perceived to be better. Big resiny/toasty oak, big blackberried fruit, plenty of alcohol warmth and a general sense of smoothness. Once upon a time these reds were often referred to as “blokey”. This gives ’em what they want, I guess, in unsubtle style."
