Tasting Notes:

Light crimson colour with bright red tinges. Aromas and flavours of dark cherries and blueberries fill the wine, supported by well integrated, sweet oak. The concentrated and medium bodied palate finishes long and intense.

Technical:

The 2018 growing season was divided into two halves. Winter and Spring was cool with good rain fall and moister in the soils. Vine growth took advantage of these conditions and we achieved great canopies with higher than average crop levels heading into summer. Some high humidity days over the Christmas period meant we needed to be in high alert from the elevated disease pressure. Luckily, Summer turned a corner and we experienced above average temperatures and below average rain fall. This continued through mid-January and February, prompted all varieties to ripen together and quickly. As a result, we experienced a compressed vintage with little time between the early varieties (Chardonnay & Pinot) and the later varieties (Riesling, Shiraz & Cabernet).

For the Old Vine Reserve by Seville Estate, the Pinot Noir is purely sourced from the original 1972 plantings. The block is one acre and produces low yields (1-2 tonnes/acre) of small berries and bunches.

Accolades & Awards:

97 Point Rated - James Halliday Wine Companion

"From the original estate vineyard planted in '72. Bright, clear crimson hue; perfumed cherry blossom; light-bodied yet intense and very long. If you doubt the intensity description, hold the wine in your mouth for 20 or so seconds - it will also pick up the savoury notes hidden by the red cherry fruits and ultra-fine tannins. Violets, rose petals, forest floor and mushrooms lay in wait."

95 Point Rated - Gary Walsh The Wine Front

"Stawberry, raspberry, hint of flowering basil, almond biscuits, subtle smoke and greenery. Light to medium-bodied, lucid and finely wrought, feathering of graphite tannin, cool spring rain acidity over autumn leaves kind of thing, intensity delivered sotto voce, so pretty and long. Translucent. A beautiful wine. So very Yarra Valley, and so good."

95 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Youthful, medium to full red colour with a good purple tint. The bouquet is smoky reductive at first with red cherry to raspberry fruit and some of the same fragrant herb, bright raspberry flavours of the regular Seville pinot - but greater intensity and length. Tannins are delicate and refined. This is a charming pinot, still a bit primal and will repay some cellaring. (Sourced from the original 1972 plantings) "
