Tasting Notes:

Born from the ancient red Cambrian soils of Heathcote and dry-grown beneath the shadow of its namesake volcano, the Seppelt Mount Ida Shiraz 2022 is a true expression of power, place, and pedigree. First planted in 1975, the Mt Ida Vineyard is a cornerstone of Heathcote viticulture, producing wines of exceptional structure and character. Only crafted in standout vintages and released in limited quantities, this wine captures the intense depth of colour and flavour the region is famed for.

The 2022 vintage opens with a deep garnet hue and an alluring bouquet of dark plum, bittersweet chocolate, and earthy spice. Fermented in small open fermenters and aged for 11 months in French oak hogsheads, it reveals layers of minerality and savoury meatiness wrapped in a core of plush fruit sweetness. The palate is finely textured with beautifully integrated tannins, offering a seamless balance between concentration and finesse, and a long, resonant finish that speaks to both its heritage and its future potential.

Critically acclaimed with 95 Points and a Gold Medal from Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion and a further 95 Points from Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot, this is a flagship release from one of Australia's most historic producers. Seppelt, established in 1851, remains a 5 Red Star Winery with a reputation built on iconic, age-worthy reds like this.

Perfectly matched with rosemary lamb, peppered kangaroo loin or aged cheddar, this wine is a rare treat for collectors and connoisseurs alike.

Accolades & Awards:

95 Point Rated - Jeni Port James Halliday Wine Companion

"Just as Cambrian volcanic red dirt stains your boots, the Cambrian-based shiraz of Mount Ida makes for an impressive vinous presence. Melds the deep colour and textural richness of Heathcote black-hearted shiraz with a playful liveliness. Blackberry, plum, cassis, baking spices, pepper and earth against a cedar toast background. Mineral-edged, fine tannins bring a real sense of finesse, elegance and place. It has a controlled richness not easy to achieve."

95 Point Rated - Ray Jordan Wine Pilot

"This vineyard in Heathcote is now nearly 50 years old and produces fruit of depth and power with a typical regional ironstone influence. This is a return for the Mt Ida which was not released from 2019 to the current release. For me the wine is about the structure and the palate. In this case the ferruginous characters show in the fruit flavours and the ripe firm tannins.  Loads of dark ripe fruit but it’s delivered with a smooth polished finish. A plush and beautifully presented wine."

93 Point Rated - Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

"This is the first release of a Mount Ida Shiraz since the 2019. This is a cuddly red, ripe and ready, with soft tannins and excellent all-round balance. Within a warm-hearted context it’s a fundamentally delicious red wine, though it also must be acknowledged that there are complexities here that elevate it beyond the norm. Sweet plums, graphite, licorice and mint characters sweep attractively through the palate, the mouthfeel plush and, indeed, smooth. This is an excellent example of a warm, Australian Shiraz."

92 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Massively saturated purple colour, with a superripe and almost jammy bouquet of very ripe fruit, gently floral overtones, the palate full bodied and fleshy, concentrated and weighty with liberal alcohol and a long, warmly glowing and firmly tannic finish. A walnutty oak touch. This is very young and bold and demands patience."
