Pikes The E.W.P Reserve Clare Valley Shiraz 2020 is a masterclass in single-vineyard expression from the famed Polish Hill River Estate. Crafted during a season marked by a warm, dry start, a well-timed 60mm rain in January, and one of the coolest Februarys on record, the 2020 vintage delivered low yields with exceptional flavour concentration—ideal conditions for a reserve Shiraz of this calibre.
This wine pours a deep cherry red and opens with a lifted, aromatic bouquet of spice, liquorice, and layers of red, blue, and black fruits. Subtle notes of charry French oak frame the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is driven by juicy red cherry and black bramble fruit. Intriguing accents of white pepper and Chinese five spice bring savoury complexity, supported by a seamless structure of bright acidity and savoury, whole bunch-derived tannins. Gentle cap management during fermentation preserved aromatics, while a mix of spontaneous and inoculated ferment added layered depth.
Awarded 95 Points by Halliday Wine Companion and Ray Jordan, with 91 Points from Huon Hooke, this wine is both powerful and poised, offering excellent cellaring potential. Serve alongside spiced lamb shoulder, Peking duck, or a black garlic eggplant stir-fry for a perfect pairing.

Wow – loads of fresh shaved deli meat here, with black cherries, kirsch, clove, star anise, pink peppercorn and licorice. In the mouth, the wine is pert and finer than expected from the meaty introduction, yet it does not waver from its savoury roots. Very good, very long, and more-ish for its bacon fat and maple vibes. Like it.

Small vintage after a challenging lead up and poor flowering, but oh my, did things turn for the better then, with deep concentration and refined poise features of an excellent wine as part of a super range. It is so bright and luminous with its brilliant fruit presentation. All the reds are wild fermented, largely hand plunged and bottled unfiltered. So, you are getting a real expression of that wonderful Clare soil. A wine of great poise and charm.
91 Points Huon Hooke, The Real Review
Deep, solid red/purple colour. Reserved aromas of plum and blackberry sheened with a savoury earthiness, the palate medium-bodied and soft, forward and earthy, with grainy but supple tannins gently firming the finish. It's tight at its core and promises to reward some cellaring.
