Crafted by legendary former Penfolds Grange winemaker John Duval, the 2019 Eligo Shiraz is the pinnacle of Barossa elegance and power, sourced from low-yielding old vineyards across Moppa, Ebenezer and Eden Valley. The vintage delivered significantly reduced yields due to spring frost and dry conditions, but what the vines lacked in quantity they made up for in concentration, producing fruit with exceptional colour, richness and structure.
A 54% Barossa and 46% Eden Valley blend, this wine underwent meticulous small-batch fermentation with extended skin contact for depth and complexity. Matured for 18 months in 55% new French oak hogsheads, the Eligo reveals a brooding, intense palate with layers of blackberry, black cherry, dark chocolate and liquorice, underpinned by savoury spice and tightly knit, grippy tannins.
Powerful yet graceful, the 2019 Eligo is a commanding wine designed to age beautifully over the next 15+ years, though its richness and polish make it compelling even in its youth. Ideal with slow-braised lamb shanks, chargrilled ribeye, or aged hard cheeses.

From a 5 Red Star James Halliday Rated Winery, this is an elite collectible Shiraz that captures the soul of the Barossa.
96 Point Rated - Erin Larkin Robert Parker Wine Advocate
“The 2019 vintage was the first in two consecutive drought years in the Barossa, and the wines are unsurprisingly concentrated and brooding. In this 2019 Eligo Shiraz, we see lashings of exotic spice, aniseed, licorice and resinous char contained within a framework of fine, silty tannins. This is a big wine, make no mistake, but eminently balanced.”
95 Point Rated - Dave Brookes Halliday Wine Companion
In 2019, John Duval's subregional shiraz blend saw the Barossa Valley just nudge out the Eden Barossa Valley, 53/47% respectively. The Eligio has always been a study of concentration of fruit and detail and nothing has changed with this release. Powerful blackberry and plum fruits, graphite-cored and studded with spice, earth and dark chocolate. Substantial granitic tannin plunges through the heady fruit providing ample support and the finish trails off admirably.
95 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review
Tremendously concentrated colour, deep, dark and brooding, and it stains the glass. Black pepper, iodine and spice aromas. The wine is very full bodied, massively structured and powerful, the tannins grippy but balanced. It's a wine that begs to be cellared and will surely repay long keeping. A whopper, but it doesn't overplay its hand. Oak and extraction have been superbly handled.
