Tasting Notes:

Crimson red with a magenta hue in the glass. A complex and fragrant nose combining lifted elderberry and dark plum with choc mint, hints of liquorice and graphite notes. An intense palate of sweet forest floor, red cherry and milk chocolate, intertwined with notes of baking spice and aniseed. The palate is long and lingering, firm tannins with flavours of damson plumbs, blueberry compote and toasty chestnut from the oak. A wine of enormous complexity and longevity.

Technical:
The authentic and beautifully-concentrated The Armagh Shiraz, is a powerfully-compressed wine that explodes with aroma and flavour. Intense, plush and generous, the oak is hidden behind curtains of deep, ripe, intense fruit and extraordinarily fine, structured tannins. The vineyard is hand-harvested, with several passes, to achieve optimum ripeness and flavour profile. Vinification takes place in two-tonne, open-top fermenters with heading-down boards. Regular rack-and-return and pump-overs take place to optimise extraction of colour and flavour; in some vintages post-ferment maceration may be an option. At completion of fermentation the wine is pressed off and matured in a combination of new and old French and American oak hogsheads for 13 to 19 months.
Accolades & Awards:

96 Points - James Halliday Wine Companion

"The star of the Jim Barry show - it plays a different medley. This is superbly honed, brimming with power and depth, full-bodied yet there's a certain refinement too. Astonishing colour, all dark ruby and bright with purple tinges, the tannins velvety and savoury, the finish long. Every detail taken care of and the end result a complete wine. Surprisingly approachable, but built to last a considerable distance."

96 Points - Matthew Jukes Decanter

95 Points - Nick Stock James Suckling

"This flagship shiraz is both measured and richly fruited. It has a strong serve of bold oak across ripe, rich and dense old-vine fruit. Smells of mulberries, red plums and sweet baking spices. The long and silky palate is plump and supported by ample, silky tannins. Drink in the next two decades."

95 Points - Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Very deep, bold youthful purple colour; lovely fresh, clean aromas with perfectly ripened black fruit and violet aromas; oak is well in harmony, even at this tender age. The wine is elegant as well as full-bodied, tightly framed and stylish, not at all overripe or over-built. The tannins are generous, savoury and long, finely grained and suave. A very fine wine indeed, elegant and balanced even at this age. Evolution of the style is apparent."

94 Points - Joe Czerwinski Robert Parkers Wine Advocate

"The 2014 The Armagh Shiraz boasts intense aromas of vanilla, cedar and boysenberries. It's a full-bodied, creamy-ripe wine, big and rich, yet it's held together by bright acids, with 20 years of potential ageability. The Armagh vineyard Shiraz isn't that old by South Australian standards, having been planted in 1968, but it consistently yields one of Clare's top Shiraz bottlings."

94 Points - Gary Walsh The Wine Front

"The Big Boy from Clare. Blackberry, sage and mint, toasted coconut oak, chocolate and spice. Full-bodied, lavish oak and black fruit, but keeps its shape and doesn’t bloat, tannin is thick and grainy, balanced acidity, toasted oak and raspberry on a long firm almost grittily tannic finish. Plenty to get your teeth into here, that’s for sure."
