Tasting Notes:

Very deep crimson in colour. Deeply perfumed aromas of Satsuma plum, blueberry and forest berries are supported by lifted floral notes and hints of mace, nutmeg and white pepper. Delicious vibrant red currant and bramble fruit flavours lead to subtle blue fruits, black pepper and earthy notes of crushed oregano and roasted root vegetables, while rich and textural layers of fine, velvety tannins provide a long, plush finish.

Technical:

Five Shillings pays tribute to Paul Gotthard, the second-generation Henschke winemaker of the early Barossa Lutheran pioneers of South Australia. In 1862 he and his pioneering father Johann Christian established the Henschke winery in the high country of the historic Eden Valley, planted seven acres of vines, and in 1868 sold the first wines. In 1873, after a transfer of five shillings, he continued on the winemaking tradition from his father and began to build a reputation for quality wines. Among the first wines they produced in the 1860s were ‘dry white’ (likely made from riesling) and ‘dry red’ (likely made from shiraz and mataro). This wine replicates the blend of Gotthard's early ‘dry reds’ and is produced from low yielding, ungrafted, biodynamically grown Eden Valley shiraz planted on 540 million-year-old red-brown earths, and blended with mataro growing on the sandy soils of the Barossa Valley. The exceptional quality of the fruit in 2018 has allowed the Henschke family to make a special limited production of this wine.

Matured in 100% seasoned (78% French, 22% American) oak hogsheads for 8 months prior to blending and bottling.

Accolades & Awards:

93 Points - Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

"70/30 blend. Matured mostly in used oak (96%), French and American. Beautiful fruit, suede-like softness and flavour, ample earth and ample spice. The free-form expression of this, the lack of overt oak (it’s 10% new), the exuberance; everything here works to sweep you into its world. It has fruit sweetness but in a contained, deliberate way. This shiraz-mataro blend is thoroughly gorgeous drinking, even as a one year old. “Shiraz has black pepper spice, Mataro has white pepper/mace spice, and they seem to work together,” Stephen Henschke says. Too right. Gorgeous to drink."

92 Points -  Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Deep, bold, bright red/purple colour. Wonderfully fresh, clean, bright raspberry and spice aromas; a very slurpable wine with delicious juicy fruit and soft, light, supple tannins. Amazing that it drinks so well at this tender age. (A 70/30 Eden/Barossa blend)"

90 Points - Joe Czerwinski Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2019 Review)

"An early-released blend of 69% Eden Valley Shiraz and 31% Barossa Valley Mataro (Mourvèdre), the 2019 Five Shillings Shiraz Mataro sees a lot of new French oak but also a smaller amount of American oak for its 10-month élevage. Vanilla notes do figure prominently in this medium to full-bodied wine, but they're backed by layers of ripe, creamy-textured fruit. Blueberries, boysenberries, raspberries—they're all here in this plush wine that's meant to echo the "dry reds" of the past. In the Henschke hierarchy, where it is the lowest-priced red wine, it's a genuine value."

James Halliday Wine Companion

"Regarded as the best medium-sized red wine producer in Australia, Henschke has gone from strength to strength under the guidance of winemaker Stephen and viticulturist Prue Henschke. The red wines fully capitalise on the very old, low-yielding, high quality vines and are superbly made with sensitive but positive use of new small oak: Hill of Grace is second only to Penfolds Grange as Australia's red wine icon. A founding member of Australia's First Families of Wine. Exports to all major markets."
