The Colonial Estate Richard Lander Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2023 is a powerful and richly layered expression sourced from two prized vineyards in the north-western Barossa sub-regions of Moppa and Greenock. Produced from old vines cropped to less than 3 tonnes per acre through meticulous green harvesting, the fruit delivers exceptional concentration and depth. Grapes are picked at dawn and fermented in small open-top fermenters before completing malolactic fermentation and ageing in French oak barrels, resulting in a Shiraz that reflects both vineyard pedigree and classic Barossa power.
The nose is dense and complex, revealing red and black forest fruits, spicy plum and black cherry alongside hints of dried fruit and cracked pepper. On the palate, this full-bodied Barossa Shiraz unfolds with layers of plum, dark chocolate and dried fig supported by savoury notes of leather saddle and white pepper. Sweet Shiraz fruit sits confidently around a firm tannin backbone, while earthy nuance and balanced acidity provide length and structure, carrying the wine through to a long, voluptuous finish.
Previous vintages have received outstanding critical acclaim, including 95 Points and a Gold Medal, with James Halliday awarding 94 Points and describing it as “a massively built full-bodied wine.” Further recognition includes 92 Points from Wine Spectator and 91 Points from The Wine Front. With vines up to 104 years old contributing to this release, it represents a true old-vine Barossa Shiraz with impressive pedigree and depth.
This bold Shiraz pairs beautifully with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, chargrilled rib-eye steak, braised beef cheeks or rich game dishes. It also complements aged cheddar and hearty winter fare, making it ideal for both special occasions and confident cellaring.
94 Point Rated & 5 Stars - Russell Gallagher Vinomasters
"Low-yield density yields profound blackberry, dark plum, and spice. Palate is richly layered with dark chocolate, fig, anise, and new French oak polish. Firm yet ripe tannins, vibrant acidity, and exceptional mid-palate concentration lead to a long, savoury finish. Meticulous winemaking shines with cropping levels at 1.5 Tonne to the acre and new French Oak. Concentrated and Fruitful. Drink 2026 to 2037.
