The Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Barossa Valley Shiraz 2022 stands as one of the most luxurious interpretations of Barossa Shiraz, crafted to showcase regional purity and elegance with the finesse of French oak. The 2022 vintage unfolded under near-perfect conditions: near-average winter rainfall, minimal La Niña influence, and a mild, temperate summer without extreme heat. Ideal harvest weather, marked by healthy canopies and long day-to-night temperature shifts, allowed fruit to achieve perfect ripeness, concentration and freshness.
In the glass, Barossa Noir comes to life. The nose is intensely fragrant and multi-layered—mulberry, red currant, white cherry and cherry pip intertwine with earthy ironstone, espresso, bitter chocolate, rhubarb, and fermented tea. French oak contributes a subtle exotic spice, polished leather, and a savoury dimension reminiscent of pepper-crusted beef and fennel seed.
On the palate, the wine is sumptuous yet precise, balancing richness with refinement. Red and blue fruits dominate, enriched by chocolate undertones and lifted by pink peppercorn spice. Youthful, coiled tannins and fine acidity provide structure and tension, ensuring longevity. This is a Shiraz of depth and complexity, crafted to evolve gracefully over decades while delivering immediate power and pleasure.
Acclaimed worldwide, the 2022 vintage is already celebrated as a benchmark release: 99 Points Andrew Caillard MW, 98 Points Ken Gargett (WinePilot), 98 Points Ray Jordan (WinePilot), and 96 Points Huon Hooke (The Real Review).

"2022 Bin 798 Shiraz is a brilliant wine with cascades of dark berry fruits and perfectly integrated new French oak. The fruit and tannins are neatly aligned giving the wine a continuous and unbroken line. It has a Grange-like stature that suggests a long life ahead. It is one of the standout wines of the release and the 2022 Barossa vintage."

"Penfolds’ non-Grange Barossa Shiraz. 100% French oak, all hogsheads, with 69% new, the remaining 31% one-year-old, this cracking red certainly exceeds what the vintage might be expected to offer. A very dark purple magenta, plenty of oak here, but early days and all is proceeding according to plan. Along with those vanillin notes on the nose, we have a touch of toast, dark chocolate, espresso, mocha, aniseed, bay leaves, a burst of ripe raspberries, blackberries and root vegetables. There are spices – notably a whiff of black pepper and nutmeg. So young, time will very much be to its benefit. Anyone leaving this wine in the cellar for the next five to six years before opening will reap the rewards. A move to the palate sees the wine give the impression of being more approachable than at first it seems – time is the key here. The wine is seamless, of medium weight and good length, with fine tannins and a finish which lingers beautifully, with roasted coffee notes. This is a very fine RWT. A twenty to twenty-five year proposition."

"This started life as a red wine trial to see how Penfolds could marry French oak with Barossa shiraz. To say it has worked is an understatement. This is a cracker. Perfumed spicy notes on the nose with a peppery fennel character. The palate is elegant, in fact as elegant and smoothly integrated as I can recall. Dark chocolate and lifted red raspberry nuance providing an engaging combination on the palate. Love the fruit sweetness and how it’s balanced against the fine chalky tannins and fine-grained French oak."

"Sees 14 months in French oak hogsheads (67% new, 29% 1-year-old). The Penfolds RWT (Red Wine Trial) release is a sleek, polished rendition of Barossa Valley shiraz. Solid magenta/crimson in the glass with plush satsuma plum, blueberry and mulberry fruit notes. Hints of spice, dark chocolate, espresso, violets, licorice and earth. There's a plushness to the fruit as it hangs tautly off its canvas of fine-grained tannin, and a sense of detail that conveys opulence and elegance at once, trailing slowly with fine, Barossan style."

"While no longer a trial, RWT (Red Winemaking Trial)
remains a work in progress. It was developed as a modern interpretation to the
Barossa Valley tradition of matching shiraz with American oak. The role of oak
- all French - is something integral to the style, but each release has slowly
revealed a more sensitive oak application and presence. This is the case in
2022, and it is to be congratulated. The scent sends that message with subtle
allspice, clove, a dusting of espresso grounds alongside plum, black fruits,
red earth and almond. The wine changes in the glass, first firm and resistant,
then friendly, yielding a warm generosity enhanced by some smart, well placed
background oak and a firm tannin present. The latter is for the journey ahead,
but it is not off-putting to those who might wish to succumb to temptation"
95 Point Rated Tyson Stelzer
"There is a coiled depth to the black fruits, liqorice and hight cocoa dark chocolate of Barossa shiraz, confidently set to a rigid framework of French oak tannin confidence. I love the way the cool nights of 2022 season infuse definition and character to the expansive depth that proclaims Barossa! One for the cellar."
