Tasting Notes:
The Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz 2022 is a quintessential showcase of warm-climate Australian Shiraz—ripe, robust, and generously flavoured. First crafted in 1959 and originally sourced from the Barossa Valley’s famed Kalimna vineyard, Bin 28 has grown into a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend that always carries the unmistakable stamp of the Barossa.

The 2022 vintage drew on select parcels from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, and Wrattonbully, each contributing to the wine’s power and layered complexity. Cooler conditions across McLaren Vale produced balanced ripeness, while the Barossa delivered generosity under stormy skies and resilient canopies. Padthaway shrugged off October frosts to yield pristine fruit, and Wrattonbully’s wetter season resulted in intensely flavoured parcels that elevated the blend.

In the glass, Bin 28 is purple with a dark black core. The nose is richly expressive, offering savoury notes of blood pudding, black liquorice, and fennel seed alongside dark fruits—blackberry, plum, and blueberry—with touches of milk chocolate and exotic spice. The palate is bold yet approachable, leading with black fruit, dark plum and gamey richness, interwoven with cinnamon, clove, mace and sumac. Fine structural tannins and lively acidity provide balance and length, while subtle oak supports without overpowering, leaving a finish that is layered, enduring, and satisfyingly complex.

A powerful yet approachable Shiraz, this release has already earned 96 Points from Andrew Caillard MW, and 95 Points each from Ken Gargett, Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion) and Ray Jordan, underscoring its pedigree as one of the great Bin 28 vintages. True to its reputation, it remains both cellar-worthy and immediately rewarding in the glass.
Accolades & Awards:

96 Point Rated Andrew Caillard MW

"2022 Bin 28 Shiraz impressively exemplifies the genius of the Penfolds House Style. It is a delicious wine with a superb core of fruit sweetness and chocolate textures"

95 Point Rated Ken Gargett

"A cooler climate Coonawarra Shiraz, maturation was for a year in French oak hogsheads, 26% new and 39% one-year-old. An opaque purple hue, there are vestiges of oak still in evidence, but it is early days and full integration should take place within a year or two. There are notes of kirsch, aniseed, mint, herbs, cloves, chocolate, bay leaves, a touch of delicatessen meats, woodsmoke, plums and blackberries. Ripe flavours abound throughout this wine, with juicy acidity, balance, focus and medium length. A fine Bin 128 which will drink well for the next ten to fifteen years. "

95 Point Rated Dave Brookes Halliday Wine Companion

"Quelle surprise! Penfolds impresses with a multi-regional blend. It's something they do so well; a combination of vineyard resources and masterful blending with such quality and consistency across their 'Bin' range of wines. Deep set satsuma plum, blackberry and blueberry fruits with hints of baking spices, charcuterie, violets, fennel tops, dried herbs, nicely-judged American oak and a gentle earthen hue. There's a lovely, bright fruit presence here; long, flavourful and delicious now with the promise of excellent cellaring potential."

95 Point Rated Ray Jordan

"This famous wine is now a multi-regional blend with fruit from McLaren vale, the Barossa, Padthaway and Wrattonbully. This is one of the best in recent years with beautiful aromas of meaty charcuterie character, merging with a little licorice and lifted aniseed. Dark plummy fruits with traces of licorice, dark chocolate and a further hint of graphite contribute to an engaging palate. So well balanced and poised."

93 Point Rated - James Suckling

"The aromas of crushed stones and blackberries are impressive. Dark fruit and dusty tannins are spread out on the medium-bodied palate. It delivers plenty of pretty fruit that goes long and focused. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

92 Point Rated - Campbell Mattinson

"I’m not sure that the fruit really prosecutes the finish as well as it might, but the main bed of flavour presented, and the spread of tannin, and the overall bright-and-juicy presentation of fruit, is pretty impressive. Sweet plum, redcurrant, cedar and vanilla characters get the job done, and handsomely. Maybe if the wine had been allowed to breathe – it was pretty much pop and poured, as all the Penfolds new releases are – it would have extended out, but I looked at this wine a few times and the palate was gorgeous but I couldn’t get the finish to wow me. Drink 2024-2034+."

92 Point Rated - Erin Larkin Robert Parker Wine Advocate

"The 2022 Bin 28 Shiraz differs from the 128 in that the latter is sourced solely from Coonawarra and matured in French oak. Here, the Bin 28 comes from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully and matured in American oak. I find this wine to be concentrated and fierce, with plentiful tannins that are a little rugged. They frame the succulent, ripe, juicy fruit and present the wine as a complete package. This is a huge wine, and fans of the style will be thrilled this season because it is a lot of everything: beautiful fruit, abundant tannin, obvious oak and enduring length. It has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.68 and 6.6 grams per liter of total acidity. Drink 2024 - 2042."

91 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Deep, dark colour, with black fruits, creosote, bitumen and black pepper on the nose. The wine is full-bodied and dense with richness and extract aplenty, the tannins just a tad rustic, with a touch of chew that lingers but the tannins are ripe and supple as well. (McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway & Wrattonbully. 12 months in American oak hogsheads) Drink by 2024–2039."
