Grant Burge Meshach Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018 is an iconic Barossa Shiraz crafted from exceptional old-vine fruit during a dry but outstanding vintage. Cool night-time temperatures and healthy soils allowed the vines to develop remarkable concentration and flavour, producing a wine of both power and elegance. The fruit was hand-harvested and fermented in open stainless steel and concrete fermenters before maturing for 18 months in a combination of new and seasoned French oak, including large foudres, building depth and complexity.
In the glass, the wine reveals an intense bouquet of black pepper, plum and sage layered with mocha, coffee and dark chocolate. The palate is powerful yet refined, showing rich dark fruit, plum and chocolate supported by hints of anise and cinnamon, with a long, elegant finish framed by balanced acidity.
Recognised as one of Australia’s benchmark Shiraz wines, Meshach holds Langton’s “Outstanding” classification and the 2018 release has received 96 Points and a Gold Medal from Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion), 96 Points from Andrew Caillard MW, 94 Points from Huon Hooke (The Real Review) and 94 Points from Mike Bennie (The Wine Front).
This powerful Barossa Shiraz pairs beautifully with slow-roasted lamb, grilled rib-eye steak or rich game dishes and will continue to evolve gracefully with careful cellaring.
96 Point Rated - Dave Brookes Halliday Wine Companion
"The flagship wine from Grant Burge has an enviable reputation when it comes to cellaring ability and its classic Barossan lines. All the hallmarks are there. Fruit density, purity and depth coupled with a commanding tannin structure, fine acidity and an array of baking spices, earth, pressed flowers and roasting meat tones. Finishes balanced, powerful and regionally true with rich black fruits and cedary oak. One of the region's famous labels in fine form indeed. Drink by 2045."
96 Point Rated - Andrew Calliard MW
"Deep crimson. Classic blackberry, dark chocolate aromas with hints of liquorice/ herb garden. Generously proportioned with dense blackberry, black cherry flavours, plentiful ripe chocolaty tannins, very good mid-palate density and underlying mocha, roasted chestnut notes. Finishes gravelly firm with inky, chinotto, mineral notes. Very well balanced wine with the richness, concentration and power for long term aging. Best to cellar for some years although drinking well already."
94 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review
"Deep, dense, glass staining purple-red colour; mocha, aniseed and licorice aromas overlying blackberry and hints of char oak. The wine is dense, rich and thickly textured; full-bodied and fleshy, with chunky slightly oaky tannins and long lasting persistence. A worthy keeper."
94 Point Rated - Mike Bennie The Wine Front
"Smooth operator. Big and rich, bold and fluid, dark fruited, lavished with cola, woody spice, vanilla, coconut and pencil shavings, all of which seem well meshed into the flow of opulent, stewed and dark fruit juiciness. A heady, potent red wine with power and somewhat grace. Sticks to the palate, stains it emphatically, finishes very spicy and dry. You can see the quality of winemaking here, and the potency of fruit. It’s well done in its way."
