Tasting Notes:

Crafted from exceptional old-vine fruit in the famed Ebenezer sub-district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley, the Glaetzer Amon-Ra Barossa Valley Shiraz 2022 stands as one of Australia’s most powerful, age-worthy and iconic expressions of Shiraz. Sourced from vines between 50 and 130 years of age, yielding a tiny two tonnes per hectare, the concentration and purity of fruit are immediately evident. In the glass, the wine reveals an opaque purple core with a luminous edge, hinting at the depth to come. Aromas of blackberry, black pepper, cardamom and dark spice rise effortlessly, layered with the subtle richness imparted by maturation for sixteen months in 100% new hogsheads, predominantly French oak. Hand-plunged ferments and time on lees give the palate exceptional textural finesse, allowing the intensely flavoured black fruit profile to unfold in waves.

On the palate, the wine is both commanding and graceful, delivering a symphony of blackberry, plum and dark cocoa enriched by elegant spice, incense-like herbs and perfectly integrated oak. The structure is immense yet refined, driven by fine, persistent tannins that promise extraordinary longevity, with the wine expected to mature beautifully through to 2050. Celebrated critics worldwide have acknowledged its world-class stature, with 96 Points from Robert Parker Wine Advocate, 97 Points from Ray Jordan WinePilot, 97 Points and 5 Stars from Sam Kim Wine Orbit, and 96 Points from Dave Brookes in the Halliday Wine Companion. This rare level of acclaim reinforces Amon-Ra’s position as one of Australia’s most collectable modern classics.

A wine of this magnitude pairs magnificently with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, charcoal-grilled rib-eye, venison, wagyu brisket, truffled mushroom dishes or aged cheddar and manchego. Its layered power, fine structure and lingering, dark-spiced finish make it both a luxurious drinking experience now and a long-term treasure for the cellar.

Accolades & Awards:

97 Point Rated & 5 Stars Sam Kim Wine Orbit

"A magnificent offering, the wine presents black and blueberry notes, toasted spice, vanillin oak, and rich floral aromas on the nose. The concentrated palate is opulent yet refined with impressive persistence. Wonderfully complemented by plush texture and seamlessly woven tannins, making it superbly structured and gratifying. At its best: 2027 to 2042. $100.00. www.glaetzer.com. May 2025."

96 Point Rated - Erin Larkin Robert Parker Wine Advocate

"The 2022 Amon-Ra Shiraz speaks so clearly of the Glaetzer house style: that is to say, sleek, polished, powerful, seamless and fruit-driven. These are wines that speak of the Barossa in their earthy splay of pliable tannin, but they have a vibrance to the fruit that is most attractive. So, while these wines harness the place—this wine could hardly be from anywhere else—they do it in a restrained kind of way. Not that you could call this 2022 Amon-Ra Shiraz "restrained" and get away with it. More to comment on the fact that Barossa is yoked and controlled in this wine. I like it a lot. There are notes of dark chocolate, black cherries, raspberry pastille and even pomegranate molasses, alongside sweet paprika, ironstone and red earth, roasted meat and a throw of tapenade. This is really good. 15% alcohol, sealed under screw cap."

97 Point Rated - Ray Jordan Wine Pilot

"A wine that speaks with passion about its Barossa heritage. Generously full-flavoured with masses of concentrated dark fruit delivered with layered richness. The small crop from a reasonably challenging vintage produced fruit with the concentration and balance to create a wine like this. It’s opulent, yes, but there is an effortless stylishness that elevates it into another zone. Licorice and blackberry notes with plush dark plum and a lift of spice all play their roles. Fine chalky tannins and plenty of balanced oak add the final touch to a very good wine with staying power."

96 Point Rated - Dave Brookes James Halliday Wine Companion

"I feel that Ben Glaetzer's Amon-Ra is one of the flag bearers for contemporary Barossan shiraz, certainly when it comes to the more powerful, weighty styles. It has a sense of compression. Wildly concentrated black fruits and palate heft, yet it displays freshness and form; supple, lithe and possessed of northern subregional power writ large. There's an imperious tannin structure but the fruit just sucks it all up and charges on. One for the sybaritic indulger of Barossan wine. It's a ripper."

96 Point Rated - Angus Hughson Vinous

"This seriously classy 2022 Amon-Ra is seamless and beautifully pitched with focus and refinement. Yet, it delivers powerful aromas of black licorice, fennel seed, and a core of blackberries dusted with star anise enriched by sweet, balanced oak. Impressive energy with a streamlined shape comes forward before building layers of sweet and savory tones. Chewy, fine tannins punctuate a finish of exceptional length. A stunning young wine that will build in bottle."

96 Point Rated - Aaron Brasher The Real Review

"Dense, dark, deep and opaque in the glass. Heady aromas of stewed pum, coffee, sweet oak, dark chocolate, mulberry, iodine and ferrous earth. Dense, dark, powerful and mouth-filling in flavour. There’s lashings of brooding, fleshy dark fruits, along with nutty oak, spice, shapely tannins and a decent lick of acidity. An exercise in power, concentration, boldness and ultimately, balance."

94 Point Rated - James Suckling

"The shiraz shows balance, texture, drive and vivacity. Dark cherries, blackberries, wild herbs and baking spices on the nose, following through to a full body with fine tannins. Refined texture here, with fleshy berry character mingling with spices and herbs on the focused palate. Well driven and precise with a long, flavorful finish. Drink or hold."
