Tasting Notes:

Kilikanoon Ashton Clare Valley Mataro 2020

Deep crimson that carries all the way through the hue. Bright and intense aromas lift from the glass. Complex and rich, aromas of blackcurrant, charcoal smoked meat and cracked green pepper emanate from the wine. A firmly structured wine with an exceptionally soft flow through the palate. The mineral acidity, soft fruit tannin and seamless French oak are all harmoniously integrated. Dark brooding fruit is underpinned by layers of savoury notes, a hint of graphite and sweet spices.

Normans Peacock McLaren Vale Shiraz Cabernet 2021

Deep dark red colour, the bouquet of dark fruit and dried herbs and earth on the nose with hints of mocha and chocolate. The palate is full of soft dark fruit flavours when allowed to breathe, there is a natural earth character to the wine reminiscent of a Southern Rhone style blend. Blackberry, and blackcurrant in highly concentrated amounts, dark plum, liquorice all provide an opulent yet not overpowering feel. Spicy vanillin cedar, subtle earthy tobacco character and a touch of pepper.

Escapade Vineyards Barossa Valley Shiraz 2020

Deep dark red and purple in colour. The nose in intoxicating with raspberry, licorice along with some subtle pepper, oak, and dried herbs. Full bodied palate which is highly concentrated which is a trademark of the dry 2020 vintage. Raspberry, black olive, plum and licorice all feature with some dark chocolate providing the core flavours. Wonderfully integrated tannins then give the texture and balance the wine perfectly.

Thompson Steer Coonawarra Shiraz 2021

This Shiraz delivers vibrant notes of dark-fruits paired with rich red-berry concentrates. Touches of subtle oak and hints of pepper spice complete the palate, supported by fine tannins for a layered finish.

Clare Hills Clare Valley Shiraz Malbec 2021 By Pikes

Medium to dark cherry red. Black cherry, cassis, mulberry and black forest cake aromas swirl around the glass, flecks of charry oak too. The palate weight is ripe, round and soft, but nicely poised. Fantastic concentration of black and blue fruits. Finely textured tannin profile provides length and complexity.

Normans Chais Clarendon McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Black squid ink, impenetrable colour. The nose shows dark fruits, dark chocolate and olive notes with rich blackcurrant and violets leading in to a richly flavoured palate. The palate shows elegance and length with dark plum and olive flavours relishing. There is a lot of complexity of flavors and mid palate richness derived from obvious highly concentrated fruit and well-balanced oak usage. The obvious finesse and length along with the finely grained yet expressive tannins in this wine shows it has great cellaring potential and could be a true treasure over the years to come.

Normans Regional Series Grampians Shiraz 2021

The 2021 Grampians Shiraz a complex wine with aromas of blackberry and dark chocolate. The palate is full bodied with intense blackberry, plum, pepper and spice. Wonderful balance between fruit, oak, tannins and acid

Shanahans The Reaper Barossa Valley Shiraz 2020

Concentrated fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, black olive, dark chocolate and earth. Allowing the wine time to open up will reveal a natural fruit elegance and perfectly engulfed oak flavours. The finish is long with perfectly balanced natural fruit acid and silky-smooth tannins which will ensure the longevity of this release.

Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

A massive all-encompassing nose but once allowed to breathe you will find this mellows. Dark plum and cranberry notes with leather saddle and earth which indicates the age whilst pepper, dark chocolate, and black currants all play a role here. The oak influence is obvious despite its age and highlights the quality of the new oak used. The palate is concentrated and straight up its no shrinking violet, offering up tremendous texture and richness with notes of dark plum, cranberry, black olive, saddle leather, alcohol and scorched earth. Brooding and densely packed, this style of wine requires decanting and time to breathe to soften prior to consuming although will be cellared prior to release the wine has the fruit, alcohol and tannin structure to ensure cellaring for many more years where it will continue to evolve.

Technical:

Kilikanoon Ashton Clare Valley Mataro 2020

This inaugural vintage release celebrates the centenary planting of this single block of Mataro. Planted in 1920, the heritage clone has been dry grown and trained uniquely high to survive the harsh, cold conditions the Clare Valley can experience. While commonly used as a blending component, this iconic vineyard produces fruit with rich and complex flavours that are bright and expressive as a true stand-alone single vineyard wine.

Located in one of the valleys of the historic Seven Hill sub-region of Clare, the Ashton Vineyard stands apart due to its unusually high trellis. This traditional method of surviving frost prone zones has resulted in highly resilient vines that produce consistent fruit even in stress years.

The 2020 vintage was a warm and dry year that was exacerbated by similar conditions in the year prior. These stressful conditions were handled well by the aged, dry grown vineyard which produced consistent and balanced fruit - a rare sight in 2020! Harvested on the 17th March, the fruit arrived in the winery under ideal conditions at first light.

This single batch of fruit was delivered by the vigneron to the winery and placed into a small open-top fermenter where it was chilled and allowed to rest for three days. After this, the must was allowed to warm and ferment initiate naturally. Hand plunged daily, the grapes were basket pressed upon completion of the ferment. This wine was then barrelled into a combination of seasoned French oak hogsheads (300L) and puncheons (500L).

Normans Peacock McLaren Vale Shiraz Cabernet 2021

Sourced from a single vineyard in the Clarendon sub region of McLaren Vale affectionately known as the "Trophy Block". Fermented in small open top stainless steel with some whole berries, these fermenters ensure we maintain strong fruit flavor from skins and whole berries. Hand plunged two to four times daily for two weeks then transferred into 1 and 2-year-old American and French oak barrels for the remainder of ferment then spent 24 months in the same barrels to allow full flavor development with minimal topping and Sulphur additions before being bottled without fining or filtration. Drinking well now but if you are patient enough to hold off this will develop beautifully in the cellar and build the aged character which has been a hallmark of this wine.

Escapade Vineyards Barossa Valley Shiraz 2020

Sourced from a selection of growers I have worked with for several years across different hamlets of the Barossa Valley including Greenock, Tanunda, Ebenezer, and Bethany. The individual vineyards were picked and crushed separately providing different characteristics which then came together and were transformed by assemblage. All fruit was picked and underwent fermentation in small 4 tonne open fermenters.  The juice was pumped twice a week for a one week before draining and being slowly basket pressed. Post ferment the wine aged in 2–4-year-old French oak.

Clare Hills Clare Valley Shiraz Malbec 2021 By Pikes

Good winter rain allowed soil profiles to be full, giving the vines a great start to the growing season. A remarkably cool summer followed, providing perfect conditions for healthy balanced vines. The long ripening period produce fruit with a perfect balance of good colour, high natural acidity, and concentrated flavours.

Normans Chais Clarendon McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Hand picked then fermented in small stainless steel fermentors to maintain strong fruit flavor from skins. The wine then went into American and French oak barrels for the remainder of ferment where it spent an extended period of time to allow full flavor development and fruit and oak to balance and compliment each other.

Normans Regional Series Grampians Shiraz 2021

Established in 1853, Normans Wines is one of Australia's founding wine makers. The Regional Series wines showcase varietal wines from renowned Australian wine making regions.

Shanahans The Reaper Barossa Valley Shiraz 2020

Sourced from a single old vineyard in the Greenock sub region of the Barossa Valley on the Western Ridge. The Shiraz grapes were individually picked out in this vineyard for their exceptional quality just for this specific wine as the vintage conditions ensured small bunches and bunch numbers with tiny concentrated berries which I felt was perfect for this limited release and the style I wanted to achieve. The grapes were picked and delivered to the winery for crushing and were fermented in one small batch. Fermented with submerged cap in a small open top stainless-steel fermenter the skins were basket pressed and combined with the juice before being drained into barrel for 24 months maturation prior to bottling with minimal fining and filtration.

Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

The 2017 vintage will go down as one of the finest vintages in the history of the Barossa. The vintage indicated early the supreme quality that would be produced by the dry grown, old vines that yielded the fruit we isolated for this special trail blend which was only the second in our history. Good winter rains were key as was the spring rains followed by a cooler than average summer which made for the near perfect conditions to create icon Barossa Shiraz. We hand-picked the fruit and it was transported to the winery where it was gently de-stemmed into concrete open top fermenters. It was then carefully nurtured for 7 days on skins with pump overs occurring twice daily, varying in duration and intensity. When primary fermentation was almost complete, the wine was drained from the skins and the must is gently basket pressed for 8 hours. The wine was transferred into new oak to complete primary fermentation is completed and left in the same new French and American barrels where it spent the next 36 months with submerged bung with only one topping and sulphur addition. The wine was then blended, and the barrels were bottled without the use of filtration or fining.

A wonderful example of big and bold Barossa Shiraz which will stand the test of time, ensure it is allowed to breathe for at least 2 hours prior to consuming.

Accolades & Awards:

Kilikanoon Ashton Clare Valley Mataro 2020

95 Point Rated - Ray Jordan Wine Pilot

"No prizes for guessing when these old vines were planted. It’s a rich source of wonderful fruit from these vines which are now more than 100 years old. There’s a bright, jubey red fruit character on the nose which immediately appeals – lifted and highly perfumed. It’s been largely hand-made with hand picking and hand plunging in open fermenters before maturation in French oak hogsheads. Mataro is such a good variety with its slightly rustic gamey characters and in this case further enhanced by the juicy blackberry fruit flavours with a spicy lift."

95 Point Rated - Erin Larkin James Halliday's Wine Companion

"The Ashton vineyard was planted in 1920 and this is a centenary release. Mataro: what a glorious variety. Blood plums and red dirt, earth and berries; it is at once savoury and sweet, always plush, and often relied upon in a blend to provide a stable, plush base of tannins and dense fruit, as it does in this varietal wine. The fruit and the berries come as one package, making for a concentrated, velvety drinking experience. Very impressive."

95 Point Rated - Aaron Brasher The Real Review

"Dark and inky in the glass. Fragrant aromas of violets, blueberry, sarsaparilla, spice, smoked meats, charred wood and bramble. Dense, dark, fleshy and black fruit driven on the palate, ironstone too. There’s real power and intensity here, but absolute balance, with tannins and acidity doing their part to temper the opulent fruit. Iron fist in velvet glove stuff."
