Tasting Notes:

Curtis Family Vineyards Limited Series McLaren Vale Grenache 2015

Fine, elegant, restrained and with a touch of cedar, the nose shows estery floral/cherry fragrance, with an underlying hint of pepper: typical of concentrated Grenache . Oak plays a minor role in the background to allow the beautiful fruit to shine through.

This wine is all about texture, length and balanced fruit. It has medium body in which the tannins are long and soft while the bright fruit provides persistence of mouth feel. Fruit flavours are in the cherry spectrum.

Jack Estate Coonawarra Wrattonbully Shiraz 2013 Cleanskin

A complex array of dark berries meld with raspberry, dark chocolate and star anise. The wines rich fruit and spice is balanced with subtle oak, and velvety tannins, which combine to deliver an intense, yet elegant finish.

Lou Miranda Estate Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Deep crimson red. Stewed plum and Christmas pudding aromas with oak spice nuances and minty notes. Flavours of plum follow through to palate, enhanced by forest fruits, which is perfectly matched to cigar box oak from toasted oak barrels. The balanced tannins result in a great length of flavour and a savoury finish

Evil Incarnate Shiraz 2016

Crimson with purple magenta hues. Expressive bouquet with dark berry fruit, some white pepper, vanillin oak and some further depth coming from chocolate and mocha notes. Quite a robust full flavoured Shiraz with blackberry the figurehead here whilst some alluring flavours of smoky oak, cinnamon, fruitcake and chocolate all intermingle through the middle palate before finishing with velvety smooth tannins.

The Colonial Estate Exile Barossa Valley Shiraz 2008

Plum and coconut oak on the nose, the palate has layers of ripe dark fruits including, plum and blackberry, there is also violets on show and even some meaty notes find their way into the mix. There are exceptionally soft but persistent tannins and lingering finish without being cloying and heavy.

Songlines Estates Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir 2016

Crimson red with dark purple hues. As fragrant as they come with red cherries, pepper, fennel and a slight hint of liquorice and herbs which gives the wine a wonderful extra dimension. Dark red cherries are the hero here with a touch of pepper and licorice which although appear to be opposite ends of the taste spectrum work harmoniously together whilst some crisp acid provides a refreshing Moorish finish.. The wine is round and voluptuous with the vibrant fruit bright and multi dimensional.

Coppabella Hilltops Procella I Shiraz 2015

A captivating nose of vivid red fruits and spice. From nose to palate there is a seamless-ness to this wine. You will find succulent, juicy summer fruits on the palate, lifted by white pepper and fragrant spice. The palate is powerful yet refined with bright lifted fruits, rich concentrated berries and fine integrated tannins. The finish is long and in complete harmony.

Evil Incarnate Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Crimson with purple magenta hues. Displays blackcurrant, plum and mint notes surrounded by a subtle hint of cedary oak. Vibrant thrust of blackcurrant flavours the palate is silky smooth with chocolate and cassis flavours. The wine continues to roll towards the finish surrounded by more complex notes of mint, oak, which create a long lingering finish.

Technical:

Curtis Family Vineyards Limited Series McLaren Vale Grenache 2015

This producer sources fruit from a combination of owned vineyards and premium McLaren Vale growers. The blend of individual vineyard and sub-regional characteristics is the key to the resulting style. Sub regions are Blewitt Springs, McLaren Flat, Willunga and McLaren Vale.

Wine was matured in oak barrels, ranging from new to 2 year oak. with a mixture of French and American oak.

Jack Estate Coonawarra Wrattonbully Shiraz 2013 Cleanskin

An excellent spring combined with a great berry set provided a vintage with balanced yields and high quality fruit. The warm summer months followed by a beautiful long ‘Indian summer’ allowed the grapes to be harvested at optimal flavour and maturity.

Only the finest parcels of fruit were selected from premium Coonawarra and Wrattonbully vineyards, enabling our winemakers to craft a wine that reflects this perfect synergistic combination.

Lou Miranda Estate Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Making wine has been a passion that has passed through three generations of Miranda’s. We are proud to introduce the family’s premium ‘old vine’ wines. These wines are a reflection of our love and dedication to wine, food and family.

The grapes for this wine are grown on the Estate vineyards in the Barossa Valley. Single wire trellising, low cropping level and an ideal ripening season allowed the grapes to mature to their optimum ripeness. Oak matured for 26 months. Fermented at 25 - 28c, twice daily rack and returns into open vats increases the oxygen contact during fermentation. Optimum skin contact defines the soft tannins and gives structure on the palate.

The 2014 vintage provided elegant wines with structure and balance. Low yields and even vineyard ripening provided nice flavour and balanced tannins. This complex wine makes an impressive companion for lamb roast or rich stews.

Evil Incarnate Shiraz 2016

Select parcels of fruit were selected due to their intense fruit flavour and then were picked, transported to winery, crushed immediately. The skin and juice mix is allowed to warm naturally over several days after which it begins fermentation. Fermentation is held cool which helps to retain bright primary fruit characters in the wine. Following ferment, the wines are carefully pressed, separating them from the skins. The wine is then run down to oak barrels for maturation, before being blended, filtered and then finally bottled.

The Colonial Estate Exile Barossa Valley Shiraz 2008

The Colonial Estate is a range of limited-production Barossa Valley wines that are handpicked and vinified using mainly French methods. Our whole approach to making wine in Australia has been French influenced, so it is this ethos that guides us.

The wines are handpicked and the reds receive cold pre-maceration, delestages, pigeage, and maceration on the skins prior to ageing in French oak; whilst the whites get whole-bunch pressing and lees bâtonnage and are fermented with yeasts. The reds come, in principle from the prime Northern Arc of the Barossa Valley and the whites from the cool-climate of the Adelaide Hills.

Songlines Estates Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir 2016

The 2015/16 growing season was a near perfect one - a little dry, with a slightly larger than average crop. This was helped out by a healthy dose of rainfall in February as the grapes reached maturity and ensured that the grapes were of excellent quality. We sourced fruit from a single vineyard which we felt was 2016’s standout Pinot Noir crop then whole bunch fermentation took place in a small open top fermenter. After fermentation and maceration the wine was racked into 1-3 year old French barriques. After natural malolactic fermentation, the wines were matured for a period of 9 months before final barrel selection, blending and bottling.

Coppabella Hilltops Procella I Shiraz 2015

2015 was an extraordinary vintage in the Hilltops. Beginning with a cool, wet spring it went on to deliver warm dry weather through to harvest, resulting in a gradual ripening of fruit. Yields were small but flavours were both concentrated and captivating. The fruit was cold soaked for 5 days before being inoculated in open fermenters. The wine was fermented gradually over 12 days then matured in French Puncheons and Hogsheads (25% new) for 12 months.

Accolades & Awards:

Curtis Family Vineyards Limited Series McLaren Vale Grenache 2015

95 Points James Halliday Wine Companion

From 100yo vines, hand-picked and sorted, open-fermented, matured for 18 months in French hogsheads. Very good, bright, clear crimson colour; has managed to keep the oak subservient to the plum and red cherry fruit, fine-grained tannins providing texture and structure. Impressive stuff, good now or much later.

91 Points Patrick Eckel

The nose has new season raspberry with touches of red cherry that is framed amongst a brambly, ever so dusty backdrop. The palate is drying in terms of both the fine, tight knit tannins as well as the saliva drying acidity. This is all pitted against the sweet fruit versus savoury structure monologue that the wine manages to control. The finish is lean but maintains a brightness of fruit that drives a long and elegant finish.

“An exceptional cool-climate rendition, the bouquet offers pristine fruit characters of black/blueberry, dark plum and raspberry coulis, wonderfully enhanced by mixed spice, violet and cedar notes. The palate exhibits fruit richness and silky texture, superbly framed by loads of fine tannins. The wine is beautifully detailed and styled with impeccable balance and harmony.

95 Points & Special Value James Halliday Wine Companion

The bouquet is very expressive, bordering on floral, with nuances of sandalwood and fresh leather underneath; the palate has an incisive, fresh mouthfeel to the display of cherry and plum fruits, here with forest notes in the background. It has excellent length, yet achieves all this with a lightness of touch.

94 Points Tony Keys

“Very slight coffee bean hint on the nose which is predominantly black plum, enters the mouth with power to the fore and strides across the palate in a determined way, robust but not coarse.”
