Fu Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016 Export Label

Deep dark black with crimson hues. A hedonistic style which needs time to breathe to show its true character. The fruit characters are blackberry and there is white pepper and some seductive spice. Some age is showing and is evident through the characters of leather saddle, coffee, and chocolate. Powerful fruit flavours are evident thanks in large part to the old vine material used there’s a blanket of tannin and oak which all work together to provide the backbone. Plum, liqueur, leather, earth, coffee and smoked meat all perform back up roles. A perfect balance between oak and fruit has been achieved and these characters appear to have perfectly melted into one another over time due to the use of high-quality oak and minimal Sulphur use. The tannin structure is long and velvety with the wine having an incredibly long finish.

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2017

Well-balanced. Whirling black fruits and an oscillating Shiraz disposition – Bin 28 by any other name, personality intact. Flavours akin to a consommé of dried porcini mushrooms; structurally embedded with grainy/sandy tannins. Additionally, tobacco, tabasco and tamarind noted ... okay to mention taut, tenacious?! Exits with an almost negroni / Cynar bittersweet clean finish. Very much looking forward to monitoring this 2017 Bin 28’s journey in bottle.  12 months in seasoned American oak hogshead.  Crimson red, a shimmer of garnet on rim  Exuberant aromatics. At first, back to school – memories of black jelly beans, then a gentle spectral gradation to red liquorice and redcurrants. Adhering to this colour theme, goji berry, wild raspberry and a red-fruited chutney. A transient suggestion of sandalwood spices.

Einzellage Seppeltsfield Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

Deep dense red brick in colour. Concentrated nose, pinpoint ripeness, and black fruits with incredible elegance. Full bodied sweet ripe flavours of dark berries and plum, it has lushness and the flavours fold over one another in masses, which create an array of gorgeous flavours. Chocolate, mocha, spice and even acid play a part here. The perfectly timed ripeness is what keeps grabbing you. Smooth grained tannins come late and the finish is like Velvet.

Viking Grand Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018

Dark deep red with crimson edge. Exceptionally concentrated and youthful currently, distinct nose of roasted herb, truffle and jammy black fruits, raspberries, blueberries and cassis. The body is round and voluminous with mouth fulls of  pure black fruit interwoven with some earth and roasted herb character adding a perfect side note whilst the finish is powerful and quite long and youthful it should only improve over the next 2 years and drink well for many years to come.

Songlines Estates Basket Pressed McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Bright purple with bright red hue.Lovely intense highly fragrant nose showcasing fresh cut plum, blueberry and some olive notes. Spicy vanillin oak rounds out the nose without being overbearing.Classical McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon with our trademark style, the wine bursts onto the palate although is smooth as silk. Firm Cabernet Sauvignon tannins sensational fruit weight with highlighted notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, licorice, earth and just enough spice to add another level of complexity. The flavours evolve in the mouth and finish off with intensity typical of our style of wines.

Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Deep ruby crimson colour. A massive intense and enticing nose, the initial hit of exotic fruit once allowed to breathe will mellow. Black berry and dark cherry are the dominant character whilst varietal character of cassis is also very evident. The French oak influence is still evident despite its age and highlights the quality of the new large format oak used. Concentrated, tremendous texture and depth are hallmarks of this wine. The great richness which comes from black fruits flavours is immense, brooding and dense. The age of the wine is evident through notes of earth and leather saddle although the fruit is just so potent that they are just a side show. This style of wine requires decanting and time to breathe to soften prior to consuming although will be cellared prior to release the wine has the fruit, alcohol and tannin structure to ensure cellaring for many more years where it will continue to evolve.

The Colonial Estate Explorateur Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018

Deep purple with red brick flash around edge. Blackberry fruits with hints of licorice, oak and aniseed. The palate is softly spoken and fruit driven initially with blackberries, plums and licorice notes giving your insight into what is ahead. An approachable mid palate, which is full-flavored, while the fine-grained tannins finish with complex notes of olives, cashew nuts and oak. An alluring finish, which is moreish and smooth, yet has great length.

Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

A massive all-encompassing nose but once allowed to breathe you will find this mellows. Dark plum and cranberry notes with leather saddle and earth which indicates the age whilst pepper, dark chocolate, and black currants all play a role here. The oak influence is obvious despite its age and highlights the quality of the new oak used. The palate is concentrated and straight up its no shrinking violet, offering up tremendous texture and richness with notes of dark plum, cranberry, black olive, saddle leather, alcohol and scorched earth. Brooding and densely packed, this style of wine requires decanting and time to breathe to soften prior to consuming although will be cellared prior to release the wine has the fruit, alcohol and tannin structure to ensure cellaring for many more years where it will continue to evolve.

The Colonial Estate Exile Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

Once poured, the rich and vibrant deep purple Shiraz opens to an alluring bouquet of black forest fruits, chocolate and vanilla. Scorched earth rounds out this full bodied and highly concentrated fruit driven wine with plush texture to finish. Plum and blackberry are woven together to create a fleshy, opulent experience with a chocolate swirl shining on the mid palate. A loving spiced note alongside subtle hints of oak gracefully enhance the power of this fruit driven Shiraz. The tannins; which are velvety and smooth, open to create a long, dark, seductive finish which are all interwoven to perfection between a backbone of oak and tannin.

Technical:

Fu Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016 Export Label

This wine is sourced from a single old vineyard from what we consider one of the finest vineyards in the Barossa Valley. 2016 was one of the standout vintages of the last decade, the ideal vintage, which gave us the benefit of perfectly, ripened fruit. The smooth flow of vintage allowed us to select specific fruit parcels and allowed us to define the wine as much in the vineyard as the winery. These grapes are brought into the winery and crushed into old vats where the fermentation is initiated by “wild” yeasts found on the grape skins. Careful extraction and short post fermentation maceration is followed by soft pressing. The wine is transferred into brand new oak barrels where the malolactic fermentation is completed before racking and maturation for 36 months in barrels where it stayed with no topping or Sulphur addition.  A careful assemblage and barrel selection are followed by minimal filtration and bottling.

A wine which will benefit immensely with time in the cellar to settle and develop. It will have a great lifespan of around 15 years plus still.

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2017

Bin 28 offers a showcase of warm-climate Australian Shiraz – ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna Vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented.

South Australia’s wine districts experienced a cool and wet winter and spring, which provided the vines with good soil moisture profiles. Longstanding rainfall records were broken across South Australia, with some regions experiencing minor flooding. October was windy, which caused some challenges with fruit set, however these winds warded off any danger from frost in Padthaway and Barossa Valley vineyards. The prevailing cool conditions extended the growing season with flowering and veraison both later than expected. There were no heatwaves, with only a handful of days recording temperatures above 40 degrees. Warmer weather in March was welcomed, allowing the grapes to finish ripening with great colour and varietal character. Harvest for shiraz grapes didn’t commence until mid-March, a month later than the previous year.

Einzellage Seppeltsfield Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

Sourced From One Of Barossa Valleys Most Revered Growers from a single vineyard high in the Western Barossa sub region of Seppeltsfield. Fruit was picked in early hour s of morning when temperatures were at their lowest for the day to ensure fruit remained crisp whilst being transported to winery. The grapes were destalked and placed uncrushed into small stainless steel open top fermenters. A cultured yeast was used to start fermentation and the tanks were hand plunged spending 7 days on skins at 26 degrees. The skins we gently pressed and we aged wine in 2nd and 3rd use French barriques to impart a small amount of oak but retain fleshy fruit flavours then bottled with minimal filtration and no fining.

Viking Grand Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018

The fruit is sourced from a single vineyard in the Western Barossa Valley from the iron stone rich soils. The grapes are picked and delivered to the winery and gently worked through the de-stemmer before being transferred to an open fermenter.  The juice is pumped over daily to extract as much concentrated fruit as possible for a week period before draining and being basket pressed. The skins are then gently pressed for approximately 24 hours. After the wine has completed its malolactic ferment, it is matured in new and seasoned American oak barrels prior to bottling with minimal fining and filtration.

Songlines Estates Basket Pressed McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

“Songlines” are invisible pathways which criss cross the land all over Australia and stretch across continents and ages. The exceptional wine is named Songlines as it perfectly encapsulates the importance of the land, people and knowledge learned over time and across continents.

2018 growing season had very good winter rainfall. A dry spring followed encouraging healthy growth. The long dryIndian summer that followed meant great concentration of flavours. The conditions continued through autumn with warm conditions which in turn meant disease was not a factor and contributed to natural fermentation. After handpicking whole bunches we allowed the fruit to be cold macerated for 24 hours to ensure brightness and depth of flavour. After this fermentation occurred in small open top fermenters with and we hand plunged over a two-week period. Then we basket pressed and drained into 30% New French oak and 70% older American oak hogshead barrels for a period of 12 months before bottling with minimal fining or filtration to ensure the wines true character was fulfilled.

A wine that will stand the test of time, drinking well now or over Next 10 years.

Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

The 2012 vintage will go down as one of the finest vintages in the history of Australian winemaking. The vintage indicated early the supreme quality that would be produced by the dry grown, old vines that yielded the fruit we isolated for this special once off trial. Our commitment to making French influenced Iconic Australian wine lead us to the Coonawarra region and we felt our style would best benefit from fruit from this region. We hand-picked the fruit and it was transported to the winery where it was gently de-stemmed into concrete open top fermenters. It was then carefully nurtured for 7 days on skins with pump overs occurring twice daily, varying in duration and intensity. When primary fermentation was almost complete, the wine was drained from the skins and the must is gently basket pressed for 8 hours. It is then run directly into new French Puncheon barrels (500 litres) where it spent the next 60 months of its life and we believe is a world first for barrel aging such a wine. The wine was then blended, and only the best barrels selected to be bottled without the use of filtration or fining. Aged in bottle before just 500 six packs were released.

A wonderful example of traditional French style Cabernet Sauvignon with our individual Australian twist which will stand the test of time, ensure it is allowed to breathe for at least 1-2 hours prior to consuming.

The Colonial Estate Explorateur Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018

The vineyards that make up Explorateur are based in the northwestern Barossa Valley. This is a belt of land/terroir that runs from just to the northwest of Tanunda – Marananga, Greenock, Moppa, Ebenezer, and through to Stockwell, just north of Nuriootpa. Cropping levels are kept low to ensure fruit flavour is focus. The same equipment that is accorded to our more expensive wines is made available to Explorateur. Fermentation is French in approach for up to two thirds of the wine made; the rest is vinified in a more Australian way.

Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

The 2016 vintage will go down as one of the finest vintages in the history of the Barossa. The vintage indicated early the supreme quality that would be produced by the dry grown, old vines that yielded the fruit we isolated for this special trail blend which was only the second in our history. Good winter rains were key as was the spring rains followed by a cooler than average summer which made for the near perfect conditions to create icon Barossa Shiraz. The wine was transferred into new oak to complete primary fermentation is completed and left in the same new French and American barrels where it spent the next 36 months with submerged bung with only one topping and sulphur addition. The wine was then blended, and the barrels were bottled without the use of filtration or fining.

A wonderful example of big and bold Barossa Shiraz which will stand the test of time, ensure it is allowed to breathe for at least 2 hours prior to consuming.

The Colonial Estate Exile Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

The bulk of the vines are dry grown old vines, which are pruned severely and receive two runs of green harvesting finally producing one tonne to two tonnes per acre. Exile grapes are then hand picked and the grapes sorted. The 2017 vintage was characterized by steady ripening of fruit and we were able to select individual blocks in the vineyard to get the very best fruit flavours with some tight ripe tannins. The wine is fermented in vats after extreme cold maceration. The wines have their malolactic in new French oak and are thereafter in the same oak for 24 months prior to bottling with minimal filtration and then further aging in bottle.

Well concentrated and ripe with deep set blackberry, elder berry fruits, fine dense chocolaty slightly grippy textures and underlying roasted walnut notes, Finishes chocolatey and minerally with plenty of flavour length. The workhorse Penfolds red. Utterly reliable vintage-to-vintage with plenty of cellaring potential. 14.5% alc. Now-2030"

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2017

92 Points - Huon Hooke

"Deep, bright purple/red colour, with a chocolate and fruitcake bouquet; vanilla and hints of licorice as well. The wine is full-bodied but far from a blockbuster. The tannins are firm and faintly sappy, with a thread of appetising bitterness, while the chocolate notes linger on. A good if not transcendent Bin 28."
