Tasting Notes:

The Heirloom Vineyards McLaren Vale Shiraz 2023 is a wine that transcends the ordinary. This exceptional Shiraz is sourced from the low-yielding, hand-tended old vines of our neighbours, the McMurtrie Family, just adjacent to the historic Salopian Inn where Ross McMurtrie, the vigneron, was born. These vineyards provide the perfect environment for crafting a wine of great depth and complexity.

With a rich and inviting aroma, this Shiraz showcases dark fruits and a touch of spice. It was fermented naturally in open fermenters, with regular hand plunging and gentle pumping over to extract maximum colour, flavour, and tannin. The wine then spent 16 months maturing in a combination of new and 3–4-year-old French and Bulgarian oak barriques, allowing for the perfect integration of fruit and oak.

On the palate, the wine delivers bold flavours of ripe dark fruit, complemented by fine tannins and a long, persistent finish. The structure and balance of this wine reflect the careful and meticulous process behind it, showcasing the terroir of McLaren Vale. The Heirloom Vineyards Shiraz 2023 has received high praise, including a 97 Point rating from the Decanter World Wine Awards, 94 Points and a Gold Medal from the Melbourne International Wine Show, 93 Points from both Marcus Ellis at Halliday Wine Companion and The Real Review.

This is a wine that stands out for its elegance, structure, and expression of McLaren Vale's unique terroir.

Accolades & Awards:

97 Point Rated Decanter World Wine Awards

"Sumptuous blackberry, raspberry and bramble fruits sink into the palate and linger over the smooth texture. Fulsome and rich with lashings of tannin and spicy oak and a unifying acidity to enrich. Hedonistic and lengthy."

94 Point Rated - Melbourne International Wine Show

93 Point Rated - Marcus Ellis Halliday Wine Companion

"Aged mainly in third- and fourth-fill American and French oak, with some new barrels, for 16 months. There's something reassuringly classic about this, about the silky cascade of brambly forest fruits, the inflections of chocolate and humus-rich earth, some iodine and violet, the light sprinkling of warm spices and dried herbs. Yes, it's familiar, but it's not old fashioned, with balance à point and oak a present but discreet chaperone. Tradition with a modern lens, and delicious drinking."

93 Point Rated - The Real Review Aaron Brasher

"Dark red and opaque in the glass. Heady aromas of mulberry, stewed satsuma plum, dried herbs, violets, nutty oak and vanilla pod. Big, generous and juicy on the palate. Full of plum, blackberry, briar and dark chocolate flavours. The tannins are shapely and firm and the acidity likewise brings cut and presence."
