Tasting Notes:

The Yarra Yering Carrodus Viognier 2019 is a rare and exceptional expression of the Viognier variety, crafted with meticulous attention to detail. Produced from tiny yields, the fruit is hand-harvested exclusively by Yarra Yering staff, ensuring the highest level of care in the vineyard. After harvest, the grapes are taken to the cool room overnight before being whole-bunch pressed. Any juice not pressed from the skins is frozen and used later in the ferment of Dry Red Wine No. 2. The Viognier juice is then run off to oak barrels for primary fermentation, without clarification, where it undergoes minimal intervention before being bottled after 10 months.

This wine is a true reflection of Yarra Yering's dedication to quality. On the nose, it offers signature aromas of apricot blossom, lifted white flowers of honeysuckle, and a subtle musk stick fragrance. The palate is rich and layered, with the fresh apricot flavors providing a deep weight and intensity, complemented by a punch of white nectarine. Hints of lemon citrus add an acid twist that drives the back palate and keeps the wine’s weight in check. A chalky texture and oak tannins from barrel maturation carry the flavors through to a long, lingering finish.

Rated 95 points by Jane Faulkner from Halliday Wine Companion and 93 points by Aaron Brasher of The Real Review, this wine exemplifies the exceptional quality of Yarra Yering. With only two barrels produced, it is a highly limited and sought-after wine that continues to showcase the winery’s reputation as a 5 Red Star rated estate by James Halliday.

Pair this elegant Viognier with dishes like roasted chicken with apricot glaze, seared scallops, or a soft goat cheese. Its freshness and balance also make it a great match for fresh seafood or light pasta dishes.

Accolades & Awards:

95 Point Rated - Jane Faulkner Halliday Wine Companion
Just 2 barrels. A labour of love. It is not easy to maintain varietal purity for viognier without it turning broad and oily. None of that here. It's almost delicate, with just a smidge of apricot and kernels. Infused with lemon, orange and woodsy spices, it's textural, but light as a feather across the palate. Bravo.

93 Point Rated - Aaron Brasher The Real Review
Exotic aromas of arum lillies, apricot kernel, vanilla, spice and melon skin. The flavours are fine and focussed, real restraint and elegance for viognier. There's a white-peachy fleshiness to it as well as a minerality and defining acid line that really shapes the wine and gives it cut, structure and presence. This will really blossom with some time in the cellar. Sophisticated and really complex
