Tasting Notes:

A fragrant fruit perfume of white peach, yuzu and pear flan, gives way to creamy yeast lees and fragrant oak complexities which deliver almond meal, ginger nut biscuits and nougat nuances. Background notes of flint and ocean breeze reveal themselves with time.

An incredible body characteristic of our Premier plots of fruit, complemented by a fresh line of acidity. This freshness is followed by an immediate broadening of the palate, harmonious and chalky, the wine is mouth coating but not heavy. Complex and complete, the fragrance lingers on the finish.

Technical:

A cool, high-humidity start to vintage meant we benefited greatly from precise canopy management to mitigate disease pressure and optimise sun exposure for the fruit. The success of this program enabled us to harvest ripe, clean fruit with slightly lower alcohol and great natural acidity. Mild conditions allowed for extended ripening, creating beautiful aromatics and fine ripe tannins in our reds. Marri Blossom was non-existent throughout the region in 2019, resulting in the largest netting program ever seen at Vasse Felix to protect the fruit from bird damage. Overall, a labour-intensive vintage that resulted in beautiful quality fruit.

Accolades & Awards:

96 Point Rated - Ray Jordan The West Australian

"Another belter under this label. First thing, and I have said it often, it is way too cheap for a wine of this class. It’s a wonderful expression of this cool vintage, displaying more restraint and delicacy than the marvellous 2018. Wild yeast and some malolactic fermentation have contributed to the beautifully textured mouth feel. Minerally, it has a fine citrus edge that cuts through a palate of intensity and depth which explodes through to a very long finish."

96 Point Rated Tyson Stelzer - WBM

"Ignore the price, this is a mighty sophisticated Chardonnay that would hold its own confidently against premier cru Burgundian royalty. In mineral definition, persistence and sheer, effortless line, it's next level. I love the way cool season elegance weaves a silver thread through the panoply of complexity and texture that sets apart the modern era of Vasse Felix. Is this its finest estate Chardonnay yet? Hands down."

95 Point Rated - Erin Larkin Wine Companion

"86/14% Gingin clone/Dijon clones 95, 96 and 77 from Boodjidup, Wilyabrup and Karridale. Full-solids style, 100% wild ferment, 9 months on lees in French oak barrique (39% new). Each year this wine presents an amalgam of creamy, chewy phenolics, ripe yet nervy fruit and exotic spice. The balance of these things depends on the year. In 2019, it's creamy and saline with white peach and fennel flower. Gorgeous stuff."

95 Point Rated - Stuart Knox The Real Review

"Pale straw-yellow hue. Lemon curd, almond meal and bakery items. Quite tight and focused. Good acidity drives a saline minerality whilst citrus fruit and roast nuts sit alongside. Good length and a lovely crisp savoury note to this finish. A delicious chardonnay."

95 Point Rated - Wine Enthusiast Magazine

"This classic wine is rich and concentrated yet bright and elegant. Citrus, melon rind, oyster shell, toasted brioche and nutty notes flow into a beautifully constructed palate. There’s crackling acidity straight out of the gate and subtle, toasty oak to ground it. Slippery and slinky, with salinity and depth of flavor, this is a finessed, balanced wine."

94 Point Rated - Angus Hughson Wine Pilot

"There is generous citrus and even fresh pineapple fruits beautifully intertwined with spicy oak and cashew savoury complexity. It’s great now but has the staying power to last at least five years in bottle."

Mike Bennie The Wine Front

"A mix of brittle and juicy texture, concentration yet freshness, nice saline character, a touch of resiny-cedary oak mixed in. Just ripe stone fruits, green apple crunch, light nougat notes, good length. Feels kinda fancy, though remains gluggable and relatively simple. Decent drinking."

Decanter World Wine Awards 2021

"Oaky, juicy wine with sweet baking spices, white peach and grapefruit peel character. Good length and a pleasing, saline freshness at the end."
