Tasting Notes:

Pale straw with green hues. The nose displays classic Yarra Chardonnay characters of white peach and pear, along with mandarin and lemon curd. Fruit notes are complexed by nutty/nougat barrel ferment characters and faint flinty lift. Oak is evident and nicely frames the bouquet. The palate is full and fleshy, with vibrant pear and citrus flavours. Although quite generous, the wine maintains good acid drive, and displays a lingering citrus and nougat finish. The Upper Yarra component adds citrus and line to the wine.

Technical:

Hubert de Castella's passion for the Yarra Valley saw him establish St Huberts in 1862. By the late 1800s it had grown to be the largest estate in the area. The wines enjoyed immediate and on-going success at wine shows both domestically and abroad. The onset of the Great Depression, the increasing popularity of fortified wine and the emerging profitability of dairy farming saw the vineyard revert to grazing in the 1920s. It wasn't until the 1960s that the Yarra Valley again rose to prominence as a wine region and St Huberts was once again one of the pioneers. St Huberts is one of the most consistent and 'best value' Yarra Valley Chardonnays, this wines exhibits the classic cool climate flavours of green melon, nectarine and white peach with citrus, hazelnut and toasty oak undertones.

Accolades & Awards:

93 Points James Halliday Wine Companion

'16 was a very warm vintage in the Yarra. Vineyard management and with that, picking windows and expediency were often key determinants of quality wines. Leading off with a bumptious note of stone fruits, this medium-bodied wine strings it all together with a gentle pillar of crunchy acidity, tangy mineral and vanilla-pod-cashew oak, sensibly appointed in the acknowledgement that the vintage is looser of structure, forward of fruit and more approachable than usual.

Highly Rated Huon Hooke

Bright mid-yellow colour, with a very nutty aroma suggesting cashews and freshly sliced almonds. There are some buttery notes as well, while the palate is soft and rounded, silky-textured and glossy, with a medium-long carry and a soft, slightly fading finish.
