Eden Valley, South Australia

Rating: 98
Tasting Notes:

An initial breadth of flavor (freshly squeezed lime and other citrus derivatives) – yet structurally remaining tightly defined. Round and generous. Soft (lacy) acidity conveys fruit, adding persistence, length. Great drinkability and great balance. Deceptively powerful. All augers well …

Technical:

Eden Valley experienced plentiful winter rainfall, with average falls leading into spring. However, the following summer and autumn were very dry, with well below average rainfall. Spring and early summer were dry, hot and windy, which impacted final yields, however reduced disease pressure during the growing season. From January, the season became cooler than average with a low number of days over 35°C, near perfect ripening conditions, with cool nights and mild days. Riesling was harvested in the early hours of the mornings, with overnight temperatures clutching 5-10°C, allowing for greater acid retention and flavour development. Harvest commenced on February 19th and concluded on February 26th. Overall, a relatively small but high-quality crop of Eden Valley riesling.

Accolades & Awards:

98 Point Rated - Andrew Caillard MW

"Pale green gold. Fragrant camomile lime, lemon grass aromas with hints of ginger. Fresh sweet lemon curd, grapefuit, lime squash falvours, fine looseknit powdery textures, attractive mid-palate richness and crunchy long acidity. Spectacular Eden Valley Riesling with beautiful aromatic complexity, richness of flavour and mineral length. Should age for the long term. A beautiful pure- fruited and mineral textured Eden Valley Riesling.Despite the challenging bushfires of 2020 in the Adelaide Hills

96 Point Rated - James Halliday Wine Companion

"The low yield and cool conditions from Jan through to harvest have resulted in a wine humming with the full box and dice of citrus blossoms and flavours; perfectly poised acidity promises a long future. Top class wine."

95 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Bright, light-yellow colour, with a classic Eden Valley aroma - a bouquet of dried-flowers, the palate fresh and youthful yeasty, but with loads of fragrant floral aromas and yeasty notes of a new, young wine. A very smart wine and it would be completely impossible to mistake this for anything but a dry, fully ripe-picked, Australian riesling. Talcy and perfumed. An utterly lovely young riesling."

94 Point Rated - Nick Stock

"Very classic bath-powder, light lemon and lime fragrance here, then jasmine and crushed stones. The palate is piercingly dry, fresh and juicy with great intensity and length.Super fresh finish. Drink or hold. 94 points."

93 Point Rated - Tyson Stelzer

"Eden Valley riesling sings in the cooler seasons, and this is particularly evident for Penfolds, where phenolic grip can play havoc in warmer vintages. 2020 embraces the precision and tension of a cool January, while upholding all the concentration and presence of a small harvest. Penfolds white winemaker Kym Schroeter considers this to be one of his best rieslings in quite some time, thanks to a balanced season that delivered just the right amount of rainfall at all the right times. It abounds with all the fragrant lemon blossom, spicy lime fruit, granny smith apple cut, even a tilt toward guava exoticism, that you’d expect in such profound youth, driven by ripe and fully integrated acidity. It boasts a generous approachability from the outset, making this a vintage to drink now rather than lay down, but it’s none the less for it. 12% alc. 2020-2024 – 93 points."

92 Point Rated Campbell Mattinson

"Penfolds Bin 51 Eden Valley riesling is about as reliable as they come, in both quality and style. Reviews of the latest Penfolds wines will appear here a little slower this year than usual, due to untimely ill-health on my behalf.

This year’s release is taut but powerfully flavoured. Indeed the palate has real kick to it, in flavour terms. Citrus rind, apple, blossomy notes and Meyer lemon juice. The finish is bound and slightly gagged at present but it will extend with extra time in bottle; you’d reckon it will be singing in time for the next Southern Hemisphere summer."
