Tasting Notes:

The nose promises classic Barossa Shiraz, with a heady and a complex mix of dark fruits and spice mingling with toasted cedar aromas which unfold over time in the glass. Elegant fine tannins are felt across the palate and the subtle oak influence yields cedar and soft charry notes on the finish. This wine is beautifully balanced, with excellent structure and length typifying the St Hugo Heritage of power and elegance.

Technical:

Handcrafted using only the finest Barossa Valley and Coonawarra fruit, the St Hugo collection of fine red wines is celebrated for its power, finesse and elegance. Experience the St Hugo range, and discover the coveted Vetus Purum wines, which showcase ancient soils, remarkable old vines and purity. Matured separately in 53% new French oak and 21% new American oak and the balance in used oak for 19 months.

Accolades & Awards:

93 Points James Halliday Wine Companion

From nine vineyards, numerous separate ferments (some open, some sweeping arm fermenters), 20% whole bunches (in total), after 11 months in mainly French oak, a barrel selection was returned to barrel for a further 8 months. The move to French oak is good, but in the final analysis there was too much oak for the fruit.

91 Points Australian Wine Review

You know exactly what you’re going to get here – archetypal old school Barossa Shiraz. Vanilla bean paste oak that carries the whole way through the palate. It’s not unbalanced, but the impact of the oak is more 1998 than 2018, though French oak vanilla rather than American oak coconut coffee. Texturally the palate just a little warm but the concentration is undeniable –  it’s very rich, alcoholic and no shortage of anything, though not necessarily well balanced. It’s quality traditional Barossa Shiraz, but I do wonder whether tastes has moved on from this firm, oaky, slightly tart style.

Highly Rated Winestate Magazine

Peppery varietal fruit bouquet and big dark fruit flavours with drying tannins, toasty oak and a minerally/ferrous-like finish.
