Curtis Family Martins Vineyard Limited McLaren Vale Shiraz 2021 is a powerful, cellar-worthy single-vineyard release sourced from 80-year-old Shiraz vines rooted in black sandy soils from an ancient riverbed in McLaren Vale. This is heritage fruit of remarkable pedigree, handled with meticulous care to preserve both structure and aromatic precision.
Harvested selectively in the cool early morning at 14° Baume to retain natural acidity and aromatic purity, the fruit was gently destemmed, berry sorted and cold soaked for seven days before a slow, controlled fermentation in small open-top fermenters. Peak temperatures were carefully managed, and gentle pump overs enhanced texture without sacrificing finesse. The wine was then matured for an extraordinary 36 months in French oak (60% new), with natural malolactic fermentation completed in barrel, building depth, polish and longevity.
In the glass, the bouquet reveals ripe blackberry and dark plum layered with liquorice and subtle confectionery notes. The palate is full-bodied and richly textured, delivering waves of juicy blackberry, dark chocolate, liquorice and warming spice. Soft, velvety tannins frame the fruit beautifully, creating impressive depth and a lingering finish of blackberry, cocoa and spice that carries with confidence and balance.
Awarded 97 Points by Sam Kim (Wine Orbit), 96 Points by Russell Gallagher (Vino Masters), 95 Points from Shanteh Wale (Wine Pilot), and a Gold Medal at the International Sommeliers Choice Awards, this is a flagship McLaren Vale Shiraz of serious intent. Drinking beautifully now yet structured to evolve through to 2045, it is a collector’s wine that rewards both patience and indulgence.
Pair with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, Wagyu rib-eye, braised beef short ribs, or aged hard cheeses where its depth and velvety tannins truly shine.

"Opulent and gloriously complex, the wine shows blackberry, vanillin oak, cocoa, and warm spice aromas on the nose. The palate is equally impressive with excellent concentration and persistence, complemented by plush texture and beautifully melded tannins. Mouth-filling and seamless with a superbly long, velvety finish. At its best: now to 2039."

"A vineyard-driven Shiraz showcasing purity and elegance. Black cherry, mulberry, blueberry and mocha weave through a plush palate supported by fine mineral tannins. Long, balanced and site expressive. "

"A lovely gamut of black cherries, liquorice, blackcurrant, macerated violets, cracked pink peppercorn, cedar, ylang-ylang, vanilla pod, and bay leaf. On the palate it offers the right mix of drinkability, moreish character, freshness, and puckering tannins. A savoury–herbal duality emerges toward the finish, adding a needed point of difference that keeps the interest high and the drinker engaged."

"Deep-tinted Shiraz that delivers plenty of heft while maintaining a perfect balance between tannins, acidity and fruit/alcohol sweetness. The result is a delicious wine with real drinkability and the potential to develop gracefully with bottle age. A seductively silken texture is the cherry on the cake. Complex, perfectly proportioned red with a hint of spicy oak standing out from luscious ripe fruit which holds centre-stage."

"This absolutely cracking McLaren Vale Shiraz saw maturation in new French oak barrels, sourced from the famous Troncais first in France. This is a star of the range for me. It is assisted in coming from such a superb vintage – a year that absolutely must be well represented in every serious cellar. A bruised plum hue, the wine opens with some toasty, vanillin oak notes, but they are well handled and add to the overall impression of a cracking red. There are aromas of chocolate, coffee beans, mulberries, dried herbs, plums and licorice. A wine exhibiting regional plushness, this is quintessential McLaren Vale Shiraz. Supple and seamless, balanced and with juicy acidity, there is serious length here, with a gentle fade and lingering finish. Ten years."

"A treasure of a vintage brings together the black, blue and red fruit coupled with some lilac florals. This is the kind of wine you want to peer further into its depths with each sip. The richness of concentrated blackberries, hawthorn with a mulberry berry savoury quality. The palate is restrained, allowing the fruit to complement the brooding spice of tonka bean, cocoa and nigella seed that lingers on the finish. For all its ripe fruit, acidity is undulating and keeps the wine medium bodied with a ribbon of fine tannins intertwined. A beautiful wine that will continue to evolve in the cellar for another 5-6 years but on opening tonight, I would go for some slow roasted pork sliders."

"There’s a lot of deep, inky fruit flavour here and a lot of oak as well. It’s a Shiraz with the lot. It’s soft, luxurious, flooded with sweet plum and blackberry flavours and topped with vanilla, coconut, raspberry sauce and peppercorn. Tannin has melted straight into the fruit, and the finish keeps pushing on with the flavour. If you like ‘em big, you’ll love this wine."
