Tasting Notes:

The Wolf Blass Grey Label Shiraz 2018 captures the essence of McLaren Vale — a region celebrated for producing Shiraz of depth, richness and enduring balance. Crafted from vineyards spanning altitudes between 50 and 200 metres, where the Vale merges seamlessly with the Adelaide Hills, this wine draws complexity from its varied soils of ancient sands, red and black loams, and ironstone. Each parcel contributes nuance and character, resulting in a Shiraz that is both powerful and refined — the hallmark of the Grey Label style.

Individual vineyard batches were fermented in small open-top fermenters for 5 to 10 days, using gentle plunging and irrigation to coax optimum colour, flavour, and tannin structure. Select lots completed fermentation in barrel to enhance mid-palate texture, while others were allowed to finish on skins, adding structural precision and length. The result is a wine of layered sophistication, displaying both concentration and poise.

In the glass, it shines a deep crimson with purple hues, releasing lifted aromatics of blueberry, blackberry and blood plum, intertwined with hints of dark chocolate, liquorice, and warm spice. The palate is full and mouth-filling yet impeccably balanced, offering plush dark-berry fruit framed by fine, velvety tannins that glide into a long, elegant finish. This is McLaren Vale Shiraz at its most complete — rich, plush, and powerful, yet approachable in its youth and capable of graceful evolution in the cellar.

A perfect companion to slow-braised beef cheeks, chargrilled lamb with rosemary, or a mushroom and truffle risotto, where the wine’s depth and plush texture beautifully complement savoury, umami-rich dishes.

Accolades & Awards:

95 Point Rated - Ken Gargett Winepilot

"The twin to our Langhorne Creek Grey, and what a terrific pair they make. The straight Shiraz is from McLaren Vale and, in a fine vintage like 2018, this wine drinks well above its price. It is cracking value. The supple texture and lovely soft plushness here is a joy. Concentrated, sure, but gentle as well and lovely length too. It also offers the usual quality oak treatment one expects with any top of the line Blass wine with flavours of dark chocolate, mulberries, cloves, black cherries and more. Quite how Blass manage to walk the tightrope of full flavours and serious oak yet offer wines which seem so fresh and even elegant remains a mystery. Plenty of tannin but so soft as to be almost invisible. It has a good decade ahead – what is not to love?"

92 Point Rated - Stuart Knox The Real Review

"Deep ruby hue. Black fruit, cedar shavings and sweet spices on the nose. Those same characters are present on the palate. Medium to full-bodied, the fruit well-harnessed by firm powdery tannins that give length and drive. It carries quite long but leaves a cedar oak note in the finish that will need time to settle out."

90 Point Rated - Ned Goodwin Halliday Wine Companion

"I recall this cuvée as being a reliable go-to. The French and American oak cladding feels about the same: charred espresso vanillans; resinous, dark-accented and intense fruit flavours. More reductive florals, in line with contemporary trends. The finish is forceful and long by virtue of the wine's sheer weight, extract and bitter jarring tannins. The tannin management needs some attention, but it will have plenty of fans."
