The Viking Grand Barossa Valley Shiraz 2023 is a commanding expression of the power and richness the Barossa is known for. Deep, dark red with a crimson edge, this wine bursts with exceptional concentration and youthful vibrancy.
On the nose, it displays jammy black fruits, blueberries, cassis, and raspberries, wrapped in earthy, savoury notes of roasted herb and truffle. The palate is voluminous and bold, delivering generous mouthfuls of pure black fruit, supported by subtle earth and spice undertones. A full-bodied, layered wine with intensity and balance, it finishes long, structured and powerful, promising further complexity and refinement with a couple more years of cellaring.
While still youthful, this vintage echoes the pedigree of its predecessors — the previous vintage was awarded 96 Points and a Gold Medal, with 94 Points from Sam Kim, and historical acclaim from both James Halliday and Robert Parker, who have scored Viking Wines up to 94 Points.
Enjoy this Shiraz with slow-cooked beef ribs, lamb shanks, chargrilled mushrooms, or a black pepper-crusted steak. Its depth and richness make it ideal for both special occasions and cellaring.
The fruit is sourced from a single vineyard in the Western Barossa Valley from the iron stone rich soils. The grapes are picked and delivered to the winery and gently worked through the de-stemmer before being transferred to an open fermenter. The juice is pumped over daily to extract as much concentrated fruit as possible for a week period before draining and being basket pressed. The skins are then gently pressed for approximately 24 hours. After the wine has completed its malolactic ferment, it is matured in new and seasoned American oak barrels prior to bottling with minimal fining and filtration.
94 Point Rated & 5 Stars - Sam Kim Wine Orbit
"A wonderful expression, the fragrant bouquet shows blackberry, baking spice, rich floral, and cedary oak characters, leading to a weighty palate that's plump and fleshy. Tannins are bold and beautifully integrated, making the wine sturdy and mouth-filling with a persistent, satisfying finish. At its best: now to 2037. $50.00."
