Tasting Notes:

Deep purple to crimson red in colour, this Barossa Valley Sparkling Shiraz is both elegant and vibrant. Sourced from low-cropping vineyards across the northwestern Barossa—spanning Marananga, Greenock, Moppa, Ebenezer, and Stockwell—this wine is crafted from a blend of vintages for depth and richness.

Primary fermentation took place in stainless steel, followed by barrel fermentation on lees to build body and complexity. The finished parcels were then blended and underwent secondary fermentation, giving this wine its refined sparkle and creamy mousse.

The nose is rich with blackberry, cherry, and spice, accented by licorice and hints of oak. The palate is full-flavoured and creamy, bursting with plum, blackberries, and licorice, with a soft, fruit-driven core and fine tannin structure. A fresh and lively finish makes this a truly moreish sparkling red.

This wine pairs beautifully with char-grilled sausages, duck confit, sticky barbecue ribs, or even dark chocolate desserts, offering versatility and indulgence from start to finish.

I even thought about sending it back as I had not tried sparkling Shiraz. However I read up about it and dutifully chilled a bottle and presented it at a dinner party and it was huge success.

I have always selected a full bodied Sparkling Shiraz from the Rutherglen region until I came across The Colonial Estate. It ticks all the boxes. I don’t have all the words to describe it in tasting notes. If I take it along to a barbecue or a pre taster drink on a social occasion I know it will be well received

It’s much drier and the taste sort of disappears in the mouth once you’ve swallowed. Certainly didn’t linger. It’s certainly not horrible but think I would rather pay $5 more a bottle for the Seppelt. Will try a different one from Get Wines Direct in my next order but wouldn’t buy this one again.
