Pirathon Silver Shiraz 2017 has a deep red core with bright hues. The nose consists of lifted dark fruits that dominate the aromatics (ripe plums, blackberry) with background cedar oak and spice nuances of smoked paprika and fennel. The palate is rich, smooth and powerful made to the stylistic template of Pirathon and the Barossa Valley. Immediate flavours of satsuma plums, boysenberry and dark chocolate are wound together with fine powdery coating tannins providing the structure and flavour persistence of the wine. Oak flavours are present with hints of cedar and spice adding complexity and texture. Balanced and approachable for drinking in its youth or if you prefer cellar over the next decade.
The 2017 growing season started off well with above average rainfall during the winter and spring months. September saw record rainfalls over double the long term average providing plenty of water reserves leading in to summer. Temperatures during summer were moderate allowing a cooler and longer ripening period. March provided favourable harvesting conditions with little rainfall and above average temperatures allowing for all fruit to be picked at optimum flavour and ripeness. The grapes were harvested from the low-yielding vineyards of traditional family growers in the north-western Barossa districts of Greenock, Moppa, Belvedere, Koonunga and Ebenezer. Each vineyard adds its own exclusive dimension to Pirathon Shiraz and combined they produce the ultimate blend.

"Wonderfully fruited and beautifully fragrant, the wine shows black/blueberry, vanilla, cedar and mixed spice aromas on the nose, leading to a concentrated palate that’s supple and fleshy. It’s impressively weighted and intense, backed by silky tannins, finishing long and delectable. At its best: now to 2027."

"A super slurper. Juicy with judicious richness and ripeness, soft tannins, dark berry fruit and a coating of liquid spice. This is a pretty darn lush red that is darn pretty. Easy drinking, easy to like."

"100% shiraz. Sweet raspberry, plum, toffee and asphalt flavours move softly through the mouth. It's both fresh and bold, the fruit flavours well complemented by clovey, smoky oak. Warmth on the finish and relative simplicity the only quality constraints."

I haven't had a look at a Pirathon Shiraz for around ten years I reckon. It's good to be back in the game when this came through the door recently. Track this down too - it's top stuff for 25 bucks. A clever slice of the Barossa without burning the back pocket. The density is impressive with all the good gear you'd expect. A blend of 20 parcels of fruit from five Barossa sub-regions seeing 18 months in barrel then bottled unfiltered and unfined. Dense plummy and black fruit, dark chocolate, cedar and baking spices all mingle with ease. It feels like melted chocolate rolling through the mouth such is it's generous and engaging mouth feel. Fine spices are sprinkled atop and just sit long and proudly. A ripper for the money. Drink now to eight years+

"Very engaging bouquet loaded with familiar varietal signatures of Shiraz - dark spices of pepper cushioned against ripe dark red berries. Some red licorice, sweet meat and clove add depth and complexity. On the palate - dry, weighty, firm and youthful, warm and generous, a core of black and red fruit flavours then moderate yet obvious oak with a toasty and gently char note. Firm tannins, plenty of acidity, balanced and well made. This wine can be enjoyed from today, but perhaps better if decanted and served with food."

"A powerfully persuasive argument on what it is we like about bold Barossa shiraz. First, it looks tempting, deeply coloured with good concentration. Second, its aromas feed the imagination with dark berry, spice, forest floor all in great harmony. And third, flavours are intense offering a big mouthful of wine that is velvety, ripe fruited and long, the fruit moving from blackberry, licorice, dark chocolate and leather to baked earth.
In comparison to the 2018, also available, this is a more muscular tannic example of the style which is on the high side alcohol-wise (15%). It’s a pretty intense tasting experience."
