92 POINT RATED HUON HOOKE THE REAL REVIEW PEPPERJACK MENDOZA MALBEC
Vintage: 2019
Source/Region: Mendoza, Argentina
Grape Variety: Other
Cellaring: Drink now or cellar up to a decade
Bottle Top: Stelvin
Alcohol Content: 14.50
Standard Drinks: 8.60
A rich, round, and textural palate with flavours of ripe raspberries, satsuma plums and red currants, with subtle mouth filling cocoa powdery tannins.
This wine was matured in a combination of Stainless Steel tanks (both with and without oak treatment) and Seasoned and New
French oak barrels.
Dry weather (precipitation 20–60% lower than usual), small berries and slightly lower yields; cooler temperatures overall. The 2019 harvest happened about 1–3 weeks earlier than usual, and the grapes were in pristine condition. Concerns that there would be problems with frost, because of the dry spring, but constant evening breezes made frosts rare this year and outside of Agrelo, there were no significant hailstorms. Harvest was expected to be larger than usual, but the combination of dry weather and cool climate resulted in yields slightly lower than normal. A warm April at the beginning of the autumn guaranteed a healthY harvest of cool-climate Malbec from the highest-elevation areas. A high skin/juice ratio that resulted from the small berry size made for highly concentrated wines with great colour.
92 Point Rated- Huon Hooke The Real Review
Deep, dark purple colour. The aromas are of nuts, dried-spices and dark-berries with a smoky-oak bass note. The wine is full-bodied, dense and concentrated, with abundant tannins adding great structure, which will see it age well. Fruit-sweet at the core. An impressive wine of substantial potential. And great value.
91 Point Rated - Mike Bennie The Wine Front
A new thing for Pepperjack here. Chief winemaker of Pepperjack, Richard Mattner, has a love of malbec and found himself in Mendoza tasting a heap, buying fruit/wine and made a blend that falls under the label here.
Sweet fruited, ripe berries, plummy characters, black olive, mint, liquorice. Fleshy texture but builds into a good pucker. Wide, pulpy, dense, aromatic and all up very well balance. Feels sophisticated but shouts out loud ‘Pepperjack’ in its style.
