Tasting Notes:

The Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet 2023 reflects the strength of a classic Australian blend, crafted from a growing season that was slow and steady, with harvest well into March. The slightly wetter, cooler spring impacted yields, but the result was fruit of outstanding quality, with both Shiraz and Cabernet showing exceptional varietal character.

In the glass, lifted peppercorn spice and red fruits greet the nose, with Cabernet’s identity shining through despite being the minority in the blend. Aromas of rhubarb, brine, caperberry, and ironstone minerality bring depth and intrigue. The palate is generous and plush, unfolding with blackberry, white plum, and cherries at its core, rounded out by mocha, spice, and coffee. Fine, powdery tannins create structure, while vibrant acidity and a touch of brick dust texture carry the wine to a long, polished finish.

Celebrated as a bargain-priced Koonunga Hill release, this wine is crafted by one of Australia’s most iconic producers. From the James Halliday Winery of the Year and a 5 Red Star rated winery, Penfolds continues its legacy of excellence since 1844 with this impressive and versatile red.
