Tasting Notes:

A medium-bodied wine, nevertheless still quite rich and opulent. Certainly an interplay of varieties, creating an interlocked fruit weave/gauze (pomegranate, strawberry). This woven textural impression is supported by a mouth-watering finish, ushered via a lacy mesh of assorted tannins. Well-shaped and formed – no jagged edges; juicy, succulent and mouth-coating. Barossa translated differently.

Technical:

The 2019 growing season was extremely dry and warm. In the 12 months to March, the region had only 61% of the long-term average rainfall.Spring temperatures were slightly below-average driven by lower minimum temperatures (-2.5°C) including two below 0°C events during.September, which resulted in frost events on 4th September and 29th September. Summer was very warm, with December and January well above-average driven by a combination of both higher maximum and minimum temperatures. The Kalimna vineyard experienced 31 days of temperatures exceeding 35°C. While March was also dry, crucially it was not too hot allowing for an orderly harvest. Low yields delivered.Barossa Valley shiraz with dark colours, intense depth of flavour and ripe firm tannin structure.
70% Shiraz, 17% Grenache, 13% Mataro

Accolades & Awards:

95 Point Rated - Bob Campbell The Real Review
"Dense, sweet berry fruit, spice and chocolate-mocha flavours with a strong emphasis on fruit. It has an old-vine character to it. Luscious but surprisingly drinkable without any suggestion of cloying. A serious red at an affordable price."

94 Point - Rated James Halliday
"70/17/13% shiraz/grenache/mataro. Matured in 80/20% French/American seasoned hogsheads. Bathed in glorious black-fruit depth, this is a blend that leads out with inviting appeal and concludes with the structural framework that declares Penfolds. The dryness of the drought season has been masterfully handled. The tannin sophistication on display here is rarely seen in this blend, a superfine splay of mineral texture that weaves a fabric of endurance, drawing out a finish simultaneously graceful, confident and enticing."

95 Point Rated - Andrew Caillard
"Deep crimson. Lovely boysenberry, musky plum, black cherry, dark chocolate aromas with graphite herb garden notes. Generous and buoyant with rich boysenberry, dark plum, dark cherry praline flavours, with underlying ginger notes, plentiful fine chalky/ chocolaty tannins, superb mid-palate volume and integrated fresh pure linear acidity. Lovely mineral length."

94 Point Rated - Ken Gargett World Of Fine Wine Magazine
"The blend is 70% Shiraz, 17% Grenache and 13% Mataro (Mourvedre), much of which comes from vineyards planted over a century ago. Matured in a mix of older French (80%) and American (20%) oak.

Colour is dense, dark purples. The aroma gives enticing notes of chocolate, dry herbs, mocha, spices, cassis, cocoa powder and mulberries. Powerful and rich and muscular, the balance ensures it never seems too heavy. On the palate, notes of molten chocolate and fruitcake. Rich and juicy, this is still very young. Lot of tannins, through to a firm finish. Impressive length. Structure is excellent. The wine might be firm, but there is a lovely seductive texture. Surely a decade or more ahead of it. Towards the finish, notes of soy sauce and beef stock appeared. Love this wine."

93 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review
"Deep, bold red/purple colour; lots of spices to sniff, gently peppery and fragrant, the fruit leading the way. The wine is intense and penetrating, powerful and long, with a surprising firmness. Sooty, earthy, ironstone and some black fruits take up the palate flavour, lingering on superbly at the finish. Excellent wine and top value. (70% shiraz, 17% grenache, 13% mataro)"
