Tasting Notes

Blood plum red with purple hues. Powerful aromas of black and blue berries, mixed spices and violets. Packed with layers of boysenberry, blackberries and black cherries, followed by mixed spices, lavender and violets. Another classic expression of Langi Shiraz. Stunning to drink now or cellar for 15-20 years with absolute confidence.

Accolades & Awards

99 Point Rated - James Halliday Wine Companion

"Hand-picked, wild-fermented with 80% whole bunches and 20% whole berries, 2-3 weeks on skins, matured for 18 months in French barriques (18% new), 280 dozen made. Wonderfully, tumultuously intense yet balanced, black licorice and herbal/foresty nuances all in play."

97 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Extremely deep, dark, youthful brooding purple colour. Aromas of blueberry, mulberry and floral notes, extraordinarily fresh and bright, fruit-driven and aromatic. Spicy but not as intensely white-peppery as Langi can often be. It's not a big-boned or heavy wine but simply very concentrated and tightly compacted, accessible and brilliantly vibrant. Sweet-fruit core. The tannins are very fine and deceptively subtle. Oak is nigh invisible. A gem."

97 Point Rated - Tyson Stelzer Wine Business Monthly

"An intoxicatingly alluring Mast, the exocticism of whole bunches lending a wonderfully fragrant lift to succulent, plumb, spicy berry fruits of this generous season. Dark chocolate French oak hovers eloquently just under the surface of a very long finish, wonderfully laid out on a sea of powder-fine tannins. Irresistibly delicious from the outset."

93 Point Rated - The Wine Front

"Fully priced now, though, I guess, a wine with a long pedigree and runs on the board. Ripe black fruits, blackcurrant, black liquorice, a little pepper and floral top notes, discreet cedar and vanilla oak. A fair volume of sweet black fruit flavour, and again the liquorice, fine ripe tannin, slightly diffuse from alcohol warmth, all the blue and black fruit and spice on a pretty long finish. Lots going on. No shortage of flavour."

Andrew Caillard MW

"The elegant and beautifully proportioned Langi Shiraz is a Victorian classic. Originally planted in the late 1960s, the spectacular vineyard lies at the base of the 540 metre cliff-face of Mt Langi Ghiran. The well ventilated site is trellised to an arched cane system which promotes an open canopy. Vinification takes place in shallow open fermenters. The wine is aged in a combination of American and French oak barriques and puncheons for approximately 12 months before bottling. In a cool vintage, the wine shows distinct white pepper/raspberry aromas and flavours. In warm years it can have intense raspberry/blackberry/cracked pepper aromas but a ripe, elegantly structured, palate. In a great vintage it can outclass almost everything."

Peter Bourne - Gourmet Traveller Wine

"The 2018 vintage of this perennial favourite is tight and closed to the point of shyness. Yet everything is in its place. Deep purple colour. Understated perfumes of dark cherry, Damson plums and wild blackberries with hints of pink pepper and liquorice. The structure is lean and tight but grows in the glass – and the bottle. Black fruits are at the heart with a swathe of fine structural tannins that carry the finish on and on. Be patient or decant several hours and drink with a rare sirloin steak."

Technical

Fermentation method: Small open top fermenters. 20% whole berry, 80% whole bunch. A mixture of plunging and pump-overs were used with an average of 2-3 weeks total time on skins. Only natural yeasts were used and once ferment was complete, the wines were pressed to tank to settle overnight and then transferred to barrels to complete malolactic fermentation. Barrel Origin: 100% French oak barriques Barrel Age: 18% new, balance ranging from 2-5 years old Time in Barrel: 18 month barrel maturation.
