Accolades & Awards

97 Point Rated - Jane Faulkner Wine Companion

"John Duval is a master blender. This is all about the best of the vintage, fruit from various sites across the Barossa and Eden Valleys, to morph into the mighty Eligo. A powerhouse of flavour yet never loses focus. Dark plums infused with star anise, cinnamon, Dutch licorice and soy sauce. Full-bodied with velvety rich tannins. It gets the most oak – French hogsheads 54% new, aged 18 months, and needs time to settle in. It will."

96 Point Rated - Mike Bennie

"This is straight up an epic wine. It shows layers and layers of concentrated dense fruit character but feels light and fresh despite that heft. There is impossibly detailed spice, herbal notes, seasoning of oak and bright acidity. The extension of flavour is just outstanding. All up it feels incredibly classy and the fruit is just singing so beautifully"

95 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Deep, dark red/purple colour, with a rich, ripe, dark plum aroma. The palate is intense and rich, fleshy and strongly structure, but approachable now. Discreet spices, black licorice hints and smoky charred oak. It has the muscle to age superbly.

95 Point Rated - Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

"74/26 blend of Barossa and Eden Valley shiraz. Best of the vintage. 54% new French oak.

Coffee grounds and black berries, peppermint and peppercorns, licorice and malted milk. It’s a substantial red wine, mouth filling in the true sense of the words and yet balanced, finessed and stitched appropriately with fine-grained tannin. Nothing is out of place; this river is both sheer and deep.

Technical

Excellent preceding winter and spring rains created good sub soil moisture levels which led to ample canopy coverage and a healthy fruit set. Summer was mild, which in combination with healthy yields resulted in vintage starting four weeks later than in 2016. Across our portfolio of releases from the 2017 vintage, the red wines show great flavour concentration, impeccable balance and an extra dimension of elegance.

Sourced from old vineyards in the Ebenezer, Moppa and Eden Valley regions comprising 74% Barossa Valley, 26% Eden Valley fruit.

The parcels of fruit were fermented separately in small stainless steel fermenters with submerged caps and twice daily pump overs. Some batches were left on skins for up to 2 weeks to extract additional colour and structure. Post classification, the component wines were matured in oak for 18months - 54% new fine grain French oak hogsheads (300 litre) and the balance 2 and 3 year old hogsheads. While we intend for the wine to be approachable in its youth, it will benefit from at least 5 years of cellaring and should be in good drinking zone for at least 15 years.
