Rich, deep and dark crimson. Chocolate and coffee bean with hints of cinnamon, vanilla & blackberry. A silky smooth palate full of pure fruit sweetness. A hint of popcorn kernel on the back palate driven by the French and American oak combination. Ripe and firm tannins that are destined to evolve this wine into an absolute classic.

Technical:

The Grant Burge Wines Filsell vineyard of near century old vines is considered one of the best vineyards in the Barossa Valley, and consistently produces fruit of incredible intensity and concentration. Planted in 1920, the Filsell vineyard also produces some of the fruit for the highly acclaimed Meshach Shiraz, making the Filsell Shiraz a sought-after younger brother to loyal followers.

‘2018 is an exceptional representation of this wine showing depth and power with restraint. This wine can be enjoyed young but will also cover many decades. The 2018 Filsell exemplifies what the Barossa Valley does so well’, Craig Stansborough, Chief Winemaker.

The 2018 harvest was dry but produced great quality thanks to the retention of water in the soils from the rainy months leading up to vintage. The dry, warm conditions were welcomed creating low disease pressure. These warm, dry conditions coupled with cool night-time temperatures produced fruit with exceptional flavour that were harvested at lower degrees of sugar ripeness creating a wine that is vibrant and balanced.

Fermented in stainless-steel and concrete open fermenters with header boards. Temperatures were allowed to reach 28°C. Minimal pump overs were performed on the concrete open fermenters while pump overs on the stainless steel fermenters were performed four times-a-day, with reduced pump overs

Accolades & Awards:

96 Points - Andrew Caillard MW

"Deep crimson. Intense blackberry roasted chestnut paneforte aromas with dark chocolate notes. Richly flavoured and supple with fresh dense blackberry mulberry fruits, fine plentiful chalky tannins, lovely mid-palate volume and underlying roasted chestnut oak/ paneforte/ fig complexity. Finishes chocolatey firm. A classic Barossa Shiraz with rich fruit, oak and acidity neatly balanced. 14.5% alc Drink now – 2035."

94 Point Rated - Tyson Stelzer James Halliday Wine Companion

"96.2/3.8% shiraz/cabernet sauvignon, from 35+yo vines. Matured 20 months in 18% new 14/4% French/American oak, the balance seasoned French oak barrels. The hierarchy of shiraz is well established at Grant Burge, and ascending the tree delivers more density of colour, more depth of black fruits and more impacting oak presence. Quintessential Barossa, Filsell unites fruit power with licorice, milk and dark chocolate oak and inimitable nuances of Barossa mettwurst. Medium-grained tannin confidence lays out a long finish that will appreciate medium-term cellaring to integrate."

92 Points - Stuart Knox The Real Review

"Deep black and blue core that coats the glass, purple and youthful in the rim. Oak influence dominates the nose, coconut, dark chocolate and raspberry aromas. Mouthfilling and rich with very concentrated but poised black fruits finding every nook and cranny of the palate. That velvet sensation sits deep and long into the finish but could do with a little more focussing structural elements"
