Tasting Notes:

Initial aromas of oriental spices and thyme mingle with dark cherries, cassis and cranberry. The palate is restrained and natural acidity which is a definitive marker of the Cottage Block is well balanced with soft fruit texture. The finish is long and lingering with sour cherry and charred spice. While the wine is less than 5 years old we recommend opening the wine (not decanting) for 2-3 hours priot to enjoying. This will enchance complexity and bring out the lovely red cherry, plum and violet aromas.

Technical:

Average winter rainfall was accompanied by a cool, windy spring around flowering, resulting in lower yields of smaller berries. Warm, dry conditions at the end of December persisted to mid- Feburary. This was followed by cool, windy conditions to the end of March, slowing ripening prior to harvest.

This single vineyard wine captures the essence of its climate and vintage. In close proximity to the cool waters of Bass Straight, its breeze moderates groth and grape ripening to maximise full maturity of flavours whilst retaining its fine natural acidity. The Cottage Block is one of the oldest Pinot Noir blocks in our Pipers River vineyard, protected from the cool northerly winds by the Dalrymple hill.

Accolades & Awards:

96 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Deep red/purple colour. A seriously deep, detailed bouquet of dark fruits, a sheen of walnut from oak, the palate rich and fleshy, sumptuous and texturally lovely. It has concentration as well as softness and harmony, varietal and textural charm, and great persistence. Almost a fruit-bomb, but a thoroughly impressive pinot."

93 Point Rated - Mike Bennie WBM

"Elegant and refined Pinot Noir with chewy texture, splintery, clove-like wood seasoning and pleasingly lean, sour cherry fruit character. Sits up in the palate , really tightly wound, grippy with skinsy tannin and finishes long and slender. All of this adds up to a wine of pedigree. But not one for now. Instead, cellar for five to 10 years before drinking."

92 Point Rated - James Halliday Wine Companion

"Unirrigated vines 25+yo. Around 20% whole bunches in the wild ferment. Matured 10 months in 35% new French oak barriques. Pipers River's signature notes of rose petal, rosehip and red cherries take the lead here, with the low-yielding warm season tilting toward spicy blackberries; whole bunches contributing all their exotic lift of potpourri and brambles. Fine tannins coast through a long and dry finish."

92 Point Rated - Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

"It’s so bright and boysenberried that it seems floral. Give this some air and this really sings. Exotic spice, cedar wood, lots of blue and red berried fruit, cleansing acidity. Shape and form without the need for a great deal of tannin. Polish aplenty. Good now; will gain complexity with time."
