Tasting Notes:

An intense dark red shading to brick red at the rim. A range of different characteristics can be identified on the nose – black cherry fruit, spicy notes of leather and musk, tobacco and vanilla oak. Medium to full bodied with some finesse, concentrated red fruit compote flavours and smooth, mellow tannins on the finish.

Technical:

Tempranillo grapes were hand picked from 30 year-old vines in stony vineyards – Valdepeñas means “valley of stones” – in late August/early September. The soils are clayey lime and there is a chalky layer which retains water to refresh the vines. Altitude helps moderate summer heat, as the climate in Valdepeñas is classic continental, with cold winters and long hot, dry summers.

Fermentation was at controlled temperatures (25-28º C) in stainless steel tanks for 8-10 days. The wine was then matured for at least eighteen months in oak barriques with varying toasting levels. The 2008 has been rated “Very Good” by the Valdepeñas DO. Generally, the climate and therefore grape harvest, is remarkably consistent in this part of Spain.

Accolades & Awards:

94 Points - Sam Kim Wine Orbit

"Offering immense complexity and bottle-matured seductive flavours, the wine shows dark berry, roasted nut, cured meat, clove and roasted nut characters. It's equally engaging and satisfying on the palate, delivering elegant weight and flowing mouthfeel, well complemented by savoury richness and fine-grained tannins. A wonderful food partner."

Bob Campbell - The Real Review

"Aged ten years in barrel and bottle before release. Made from grapes grown in Valdepenas. Quite an elegant, gutsy red with violet, black fruit, spice, vanilla and anise. Firm, drying tannins. Drink up"
