Tasting Notes:

The Amicus Golden A McLaren Vale Shiraz 2021 is a bold yet beautifully balanced expression of McLaren Vale, crafted with authority and finesse by winemaking legend Walter Clappis. Renowned for producing powerful wines that never lose their sense of harmony, Clappis delivers a Shiraz that is intense, generous and immediately engaging, while retaining polish and control.

From the first swirl, the wine reveals deep, brooding aromatics of blackberry and cassis, layered with dark chocolate, cocoa powder and warm spice. As the bouquet unfolds, complex savoury nuances emerge — freshly ground coffee beans, subtle bacon fat and toasty oak — adding depth and intrigue to the aromatic profile.

On the palate, this Shiraz is rich and plump, yet medium-weighted and finely balanced. Dark fruit intensity drives the core, with blackberries and ripe plum wrapped in notes of chocolate, mocha and warming spice. The mouthfeel is generous and approachable, supported by chalky, silky tannins that provide structure without aggression. Well-judged oak frames the fruit beautifully, carrying the wine through to a long, robust finish that lingers with savoury complexity and warmth.

Critically acclaimed, the Amicus Golden A McLaren Vale Shiraz 2021 has been awarded an impressive 96 points by Sam Kim (Wine Orbit) alongside 94 points from Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot), confirming its standing as a premium McLaren Vale Shiraz of distinction. It is a natural partner to char-grilled rib-eye, slow-braised beef, lamb shanks or rich mushroom dishes, where its dark fruit depth and savoury undertones shine effortlessly.

Powerful yet refined, this is a Shiraz that delivers immediate pleasure while offering the balance and structure to reward cellaring, showcasing the hallmark style and precision of one of Australia’s most respected winemaking talents.

Accolades & Awards:

96 Point Rated -Sam Kim Wine Orbit

"Powerful and graceful at once, the wine shows blackberry, charcuterie, tapenade, dark cocoa and cedar characters on the nose. The palate displays excellent concentration and richness, superbly structured by beautifully melded tannins. Sumptuous and mouth filling, finishing impressively long and satisfying. At its best: now to 2040. $80.00."

94 Point Rated - Ken Gargett Wine Pilot
"A year and a half maturing in French oak hogsheads sees this wine, from the superb 2021 vintage, off to a great start. The colour is a deep maroon. The nose is intense and gives us evidence for the power within. This is generous and approachable, with notes of chocolate, cocoa powder, blackberries, bacon fat, coffee beans and cassis. There are early hints of complexity and good oak integration throughout. Impressive length, this is a wine of medium weight and fine balance. Expected to drink impressively over the next ten to twelve years."
