Viking Grand Barossa Valley Shiraz 2023 is a commanding single-vineyard release sourced from ironstone-rich soils in the Western Barossa Valley, a sub-region renowned for producing deeply concentrated, powerful Shiraz. The fruit was gently de-stemmed and fermented in open fermenters, with daily pump-overs across a week to maximise colour, flavour and structure. Following draining and basket pressing — with skins pressed for a further 24 hours — the wine completed malolactic fermentation before maturing in a combination of new and seasoned American oak. Bottled with minimal fining and filtration, it captures both intensity and regional character.
Deep, dark red with a crimson edge, the nose bursts with jammy black fruits — blueberries, cassis and ripe raspberries — layered with savoury notes of roasted herbs, earth and truffle. The palate is bold and voluminous, delivering generous waves of pure black fruit supported by subtle spice and oak sweetness. Full-bodied and layered, it finishes long and structured, with the power and balance to reward a few more years in the cellar.
While youthful, this vintage continues the pedigree of its predecessors. The previous release achieved 96 Points and a Gold Medal, alongside 94 Points from Sam Kim (Wine Orbit), and Viking Wines have historically been rated up to 94 Points by both James Halliday and Robert Parker. The current vintage has been awarded 94 Points and 5 Stars by Sam Kim, and Viking Grand Shiraz sits in the top 5% of wines in the world according to Vivino — reinforcing its cult following and international appeal.
This Barossa Shiraz is a natural match for slow-cooked beef ribs, lamb shanks, black pepper-crusted steak or chargrilled mushrooms. Its richness and depth also pair beautifully with aged hard cheeses or smoky barbecue dishes.
94 Point Rated & 5 Stars - Sam Kim Wine Orbit
"A wonderful expression, the fragrant bouquet shows blackberry, baking spice, rich floral, and cedary oak characters, leading to a weighty palate that's plump and fleshy. Tannins are bold and beautifully integrated, making the wine sturdy and mouth-filling with a persistent, satisfying finish. At its best: now to 2037. $50.00."
