The Vasse Felix Filius Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is a superb expression of Margaret River Cabernet, crafted by one of Australia's founding and most respected wineries. Sourced from premium vineyards across Western Australia's renowned Margaret River region, this elegant Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the purity, structure and longevity that have made the region internationally acclaimed.
Deep ruby in colour, the wine opens with lifted aromas of blackcurrant, cassis and dark berries, complemented by cedar, tobacco and subtle eucalyptus. The palate is rich and beautifully composed, revealing concentrated plum and blackcurrant flavours supported by fine-grained tannins, balanced natural acidity and seamlessly integrated oak, with hints of vanilla and spice carrying through to a long, refined finish.
Awarded 96 Points by Christina Pickard (Wine Enthusiast), 94 Points by Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot), 94 Points by James Suckling and 92 Points by Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion), the Vasse Felix Filius Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is an outstanding match for premium steaks, roast lamb, slow-cooked beef, venison and mature hard cheeses. A beautifully structured Cabernet that will reward both immediate enjoyment and careful cellaring.
96 Point Rated - Christina Pickard Wine Enthusiast
"A fabulous vintage of Filius, and a total bargain for this level of quality. Layered aromas appear from first sniff; plump currants and plums, dark chocolate, savory herbs and florals, graphite and a mineral, iodine-like nuance. In the mouth, there's bright fruit and silky texture, with savory, fine tannins and a long, elegant finish. Made to drink now or to age for several more years. A wonderful intro to this distinctive Aussie style."
94 Point Rated - Ray Jordan Wine Pilot
"This is such a good Cabernet, especially when you consider the price of $30. It seems the Filius grows in sophistication and varietal expression each year. This was a cool year of course, but the fully ripe fruit delivers and then some. Has a little bit of Malbec which is an important consideration for the wine, adding just that little fruit brightness and mid-palate plumpness without compromising the controlled linear structure. A little graphite and oyster shell minerality completes a terrific value wine."
94 Point Rated - James Suckling
"Abundant black-fruit aromas supported by spices, cedar, crushed stones and violets. The medium-bodied palate has a creamy texture and finely tuned, generous tannins with so much purity of fruit. Grown further away from the ocean with a more continental feel. Delicious and early-drinking yet serious."
92 Point Rated - Jane Faulkner James Halliday Wine Companion
"Highly appealing from the word go. All dark fruits and spice, savoury with a little mint and nori in the mix. It’s supple and giving across the mid-weighted palate, pliable tannins and a freshness throughout."
92 Point Rated - Angus Hughson Vinous
"The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Filius opens with a burst of red currant and fruit pastille aromas, accented by touches of herb garden and red licorice. This wine shows surprising density, particularly in the tannins, which are serious and well matched to significant fruit power and length. A Filius for the cellar."
Huon Hooke The Real Review
"Good depth of red hue with tints of purple; dried blood, wood and smoky blackberry aromas, the palate fleshy, supple and savoury with drying tannins which are smooth, and the wine has appealing early drinking qualities. The blackberry cabernet flavour comes through more strongly on palate, and the wine has typical cabernet structure as well as early accessibility."
