Tasting Notes:

The Torbreck Vintners The Factor Barossa Valley Shiraz 2023 is a monumental expression of old-vine Barossa Shiraz, delivering extraordinary depth, structure and longevity from one of Australia’s most revered producers. Sourced from select vineyards along the Barossa Valley’s famed Western Ridge, this flagship Shiraz reflects the power and pedigree of ancient vines combined with meticulous traditional winemaking. Hand-harvested fruit underwent fermentation in open-top fermenters with extended skin contact before basket pressing and an impressive 24 months maturation in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barriques. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, The Factor captures the essence of Barossa with both intensity and remarkable refinement.

The cooler 2023 growing season, shaped by above-average winter and spring rainfall followed by a mild summer, produced low-yielding fruit with exceptional natural acidity, colour and freshness. Careful viticulture practices including hand pruning and precise soil management ensured resilient vineyards capable of delivering wines with superb detail, purity and longevity. The result is a Shiraz of immense concentration balanced beautifully by vibrancy and precision.

In the glass, the wine is deeply coloured and highly expressive, revealing lifted aromas of satsuma plum, blackberry compote and maraschino cherry layered with vanilla bean, dark cocoa, espresso grounds and black tea complexity. Underneath the opulent fruit lies a striking mineral core of Barossa ironstone, dried earth and eucalyptus that adds sophistication and regional authenticity. The palate is luxuriously dense and powerful, coating the mouth with rich dark fruit, mouth-filling viscosity and soft yet commanding tannins. Cleansing natural acidity brings freshness and balance, while the perfectly integrated oak enhances complexity without overwhelming the purity of fruit. The finish is long, polished and deeply satisfying, confirming this as a modern icon of Barossa Shiraz.

Built for the cellar, The Factor is expected to evolve magnificently over the next two decades, drinking superbly from 2026 through to 2045. Its immense structure and layered complexity make it a spectacular match for slow-roasted beef short ribs, chargrilled Wagyu steak, braised lamb shoulder, venison, smoked brisket or aged hard cheeses, where the wine’s richness and savoury depth truly shine.

Accolades & Awards:

96 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Massively concentrated, glass-staining purple colour; the aroma is raw and callow with primary fruit showing little sign of development, but including a worrying whiff of aldehyde. Notes of raw coconut and sherry flor. Raisiny fruit-cake and a trace of licorice too. The wine is full-bodied and power-packed, with black olive/tapenade, chewy tannins that coat the entire interior of the mouth, then a very long finish that suggests this wine will be long lived. The power, concentration and structure of the wine are undoubted, and it's possible my reservation about the nose is an issue with this bottle, and even it might have come good with time. Time is definitely something this wine demands. No doubting the power, concentration and super-ripeness of the wine. Don't touch it for at least two years."

96 Point Rated - Erin Larkin Robert Parker Wine Advocate

"The 2023 The Factor is a celebration of old-vine vineyards in the Barossa Valley, and this sourcing philosophy is clear in this wine. The Barossa is capable of great density, power, intensity and focus, and this wine here shows all of these things. The cool, wet and late season that was 2023 has yielded a wine of saturated red fruit flavor and freshness. I like it so much. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2026-2043."
