Tasting Notes:

Honouring the visionary founder Johann Gramp, the Jacob’s Creek Johann Shiraz Cabernet 2018 stands proudly as the pinnacle of the winery’s craftsmanship — a benchmark of excellence that embodies both heritage and modern finesse. Sourced from select vineyards in the Barossa Valley, this release reflects the mastery of blending Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon in perfect harmony, with each variety complementing the other to create an opulent yet structured red.

The bouquet is rich and complex, exuding aromas of fresh fruitcake, licorice, and subtle leafy Cabernet notes, framed by hints of spice, toast, and a touch of peaty earthiness from fine French oak. On the palate, Shiraz delivers lush dark fruits and velvety tannins, balanced by Cabernet’s vibrant cassis, structural precision, and length. Maturation in 100% new oak, predominantly French, has imparted depth, texture, and graceful layering. The result is a powerful, elegant wine of exceptional balance and longevity, destined to evolve beautifully with age.

Superb with roast lamb shoulder, wagyu beef fillet, or slow-cooked venison, this Barossa masterpiece also pairs exquisitely with truffle-infused dishes or aged cheddar, allowing its intricate flavours to shine.

Acclaimed by leading critics, the 2018 Johann has been 96 Points Rated by Tyson Stelzer (Halliday Wine Companion), 93 Points Rated by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, and awarded Top of Class & Gold Medal (95 Points) at both the Royal Melbourne Wine Show and the Royal Adelaide Wine Show.

A true collector’s release, it represents the finest expression of Jacob’s Creek — the enduring spirit of Barossa excellence and over 175 years of winemaking heritage.

Accolades & Awards:

96 Point Rated - Tyson Stelzer James Halliday Wine Companion

"58/42% shiraz/cabernet sauvignon; single vineyard Willandra, Rowland Flat, planted in 1921. 22% whole bunches, matured 16 months in 53% new French oak hogsheads. The old vines of the Willandra vineyard on the banks of Jacob's Creek build a powerful blend of spicy, tangy, bright black-fruit presence and grand potential. Old-vine exotic spice is amplified by whole-bunch fermentation. Fruit and oak unite in a tannin frame of all-consuming presence. Outstanding line, length and endurance."

93 Point Rated - Erin Larkin Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"2018 was a wonderful vintage in Barossa—warm and ripe yet responsible for wines of great balance and vitality, never more so than now, five years from harvest. So, this 2018 Johann Shiraz Cabernet is supple and striking on the nose, offering berry compote, dusted licorice, mulberry and a whiff of arnica on the perimeter. In the mouth, the Cabernet provides a leafiness to the fruit and a sense of structure to the tannic framework, while the Shiraz does its job madly, infilling the mid-palate like a backhoe on a time budget. Piles and mounds of berry fruits work to almost overspill the scaffolding. This is a long-term wine. I tasted a pre-release sample bottle with no indication of alcohol, but it feels reasonable/in balance. Sealed under natural cork."
