Tasting Notes:

The Henschke Henry’s Seven Shiraz Grenache Viognier 2023 is a tribute to Henry Evans, who in 1853 planted the first seven acres of vineyard at Keyneton in the Eden Valley. This blend of 81% Shiraz, 11% Grenache, 6% Mataro, and 2% co-fermented Viognier carries forward that pioneering spirit with a wine that is at once vibrant, elegant, and richly expressive.

Dark fruits from the Shiraz form the backbone, layered with juicy red-fruit lift from Grenache and earthy, savoury depth from Mataro. The touch of Viognier enhances the aromatics, weaving in subtle floral and spice notes that elevate the bouquet. Matured for eight months in seasoned French oak, the style highlights purity and fruit vibrancy over heavy oak influence. Plush and voluptuous on the palate, it flows seamlessly with soft tannins, refined balance, and a lingering, luxurious finish.

Rated 96 points by David Sly (Decanter), 95 points by Ray Jordan (Winepilot), 93 points by Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion) and 92 points by Jeni Port (Winepilot), this is a benchmark modern Barossa and Eden Valley blend that showcases both history and finesse. While drinking beautifully now, its structure and depth promise 15+ years of rewarding cellaring.

Accolades & Awards:

96 Point Rated - David Sly Decanter

"A smart, cohesive wine from a complex meld of components... A pretty nose gives lift to wild sage notes, in addition to calm berries. The palate is sharply drawn, with clean straight lines propelled by a strong acid seam, ensuring lively freshness to the flavours and finish... Supremely balanced and perfectly poised."

95 Point Rated - Ray Jordan Wine Pilot

"Always one of the most enjoyable and pleasing wines from the annual Henschke portfolio release... It’s typically bright and spicy with plush smooth and supple medium-bodied fruit flavours. Juicy and delicious." Drink by 2032.

93 Point Rated - Dave Brookes Halliday Wine Companion

"A delicious blend. Spicy and flecked with black pepper, it shows a core of pure satsuma plum, black cherry and black berry fruits with hints of star anise, violets and roasting meats. Supple and fleshy and instantly appealing, finishing stony and savoury. Very moreish."

92 Point Rated - Jeni Port Wine Pilot

"This is one heady mix of four Barossan grape varieties and two regions all rolled into one glorious, easy going, lightly savoury wine. Has Barossan friendliness written all over it. How about those gorgeous iridescent purple hues! I suspect the role of 2% Viognier co-fermented with 81 % Shiraz comes into play there. Their blending buddies are Grenache (11%) and Mataro (6%) with all grapes sourced from either the Barossa Valley or Eden Valley. The scent is similarly memorable, exhibiting an aromatic mix half way between English garden and Aussie bush with bramble, red and black cherry, grilled plum and spices aplenty. Oak is discreet. This is all about the fruit, layers of it, supported ably by lively spice, florals and a gentle savouriness. Drink 2024-2031."
