The Devitt & Moore William Pile Barossa Shiraz 2022 is a masterful expression of old-vine Barossa fruit, uniting power, perfume, and poise. Sourced from vines averaging 50 years of age — 67% from the warm heart of the Barossa Valley for richness and depth, and 33% from the cooler Eden Valley for aromatic lift and structural finesse — this blend captures the very essence of South Australia’s most celebrated Shiraz regions.
Hand-picked and lightly crushed, the fruit underwent a 12-day fermentation to extract colour and flavour before spending 23 months maturing in a thoughtful oak regime: 30% new French barriques and hogsheads, with the balance in one-year and seasoned American octaves and French barrels. This careful élevage builds texture and refinement without overshadowing the purity of the fruit.
In the glass, it reveals an inky crimson core with purple highlights. Aromas of blackberry compote, mulberry, and dark cherry are underscored by hints of mocha, cedar, and spice. The palate is full-bodied yet graceful, with layers of concentrated black fruits, dark chocolate, and subtle oak complexity unfolding seamlessly. Fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity support a long, savoury finish that lingers beautifully, promising further reward with time in the cellar.
Rated 96 Points and 5 Stars by Sam Kim (Wine Orbit), 95 Points by Wine Showcase Magazine, and 92 Points by Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot), this release stands as a testament to precision winemaking and the enduring quality of Barossa Shiraz.
Ideal alongside chargrilled rib-eye steak, slow-cooked lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic, or a rich beef bourguignon, where the wine’s plush fruit and fine oak tannins harmonise with savoury depth and texture.

"Combining power and sophistication, the wine shows black/blueberry, violet, toasty oak and mixed spice aromas on the nose, followed by a concentrated palate offering opulence with sensually appealing mouthfeel. Mouthfilling and delicious with a sustained vigorous finish. At its best: now to 2039."

"William Pile was a famous British shipbuilder, responsible for the City of Adelaide, a well-known clipper which was built in 1864 and made 23 return voyages between London and Adelaide. Even more importantly, the vines here average more than half a century in age, with two thirds sourced from the Barossa Valley and the remaining third from the Eden Valley. A 12 day fermentation and then maturation in a range of oak – French barriques and hogsheads and American octaves – for a period just short of two years. 30% of the French barriques and hogsheads were new. Inky dark maroon, the nose exhibits notes of plums, mulberries, black fruits, coffee grinds, licorice and soy. A savoury style, there is good length evident with firm tannins. A fine line of acidity runs the length. Good concentration. Enjoy this over the next eight to ten years."
